Bernie Sanders has proposed a "fair cost" guideline for pharmaceuticals that are created using taxpayer cash, preventing pharmaceutical companies from gouging consumers on medicines they technically paid to develop. An analysis of the regulation shows that consumers in the US would certainly save billions of bucks a year with this brand-new rule. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this.

Mech Tasker It would only take smoking 1500 lbs in 15 minutes. That seems doable

+Aaron Naessens By then, I’m pretty sure the long-term effects -both mental and anatomical- would most definitely be the cause of death. That much weed would halt brain cell regeneration and give you lung/throat cancer type 300.

But what I mean is that refusing to breathe, and/or holding your breath to the point of asphyxiation would technically count as ODing on Oxygen.

He’d be popular, and probably win in most other countries – but not the ultra-capitalist USA..

FACT: Leftists hate free markets and capitalism because they are mostly weak beta males who can’t compete in any free system. That’s why they want the government to take money from productive people and give it to them for free. Yet they keep whining and blaming their general failure in life on successful people despite the fact that they are leeching on them for their existence. Ungrateful parasites!

The trouble is that consumers aren’t paying for a drug, they’re paying to develop the next drug, and many drugs fail to reach the market. There are many different trials along the way, and the FDA highly regulates the development process. Even if a drug gets all the way to human trials, it may prove to be inferior in effectiveness to other treatments already on the market. Pharmaceutical companies employ a legion of expensive people with PhDs, and you have to fund a lot of failures to produce one winner. When a drug is marketable, it has to return the cost of developing many drugs over the course of 8-10 years (standard development time) in 2 years because exclusive rights to sell the drug expire in that time. Once drugs go “generic,” any company can reverse engineer the product and sell it near cost.

    • Posted by Twostones00, at Reply

Ken K You are wrong the consumers are paying for Big Profit. Take a look at any earnings statement of big Pharma companies and the executive compensation their board members and Officers receive. The price we pay for drugs goes way beyond funding research for new drugs. Research for new drugs usually comes from universities and grants to programs. Americans are paying the highest prices for prescription drugs of any country on earth.

    • Posted by James Humphrey, at Reply

that’s what they say….the stories we tell ourselves….the problem is people can’t afford the drugs they need suffer and die except if you are fortunate enough to be the ruling wealthy class….then we can appropriate 100 billion to already bloated military and regime change wars – oh ! and tell that story to canada and all the other countries that prioritize taking care of their populations rich or poor……pharmaceuticals and medical care are not for profiting by – health care is a right.

    • Posted by Koroistro, at Reply

It this were true then why let pharmacetical companies be publicly traded?

If all the money they make would be reinvested into making other products then they would make zero profits.

    • Posted by John Shepard, at Reply

But WE are paying for it, not them. They aren’t losing out on anything by having a few failures on the market, we the people are.

  17. Posted by Julia H, at Reply

You brought up Lipitor. There is only a very, VERY small percent of people that really need that drug. The reason it’s the most prescribed drug in the world is because of what people are eating every day. Stop eating meat, dairy and added fats such as oil and your cholesterol won’t be so freaking high!! The most used drugs on the planet are because of “lifestyle” diseases. High blood pressure, cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and many arthritis and anti inflammation drugs wouldn’t be needed if people weren’t eating a diet that promotes those conditions. Want to stop big pharma from taking a lot of your money? Stop consuming the things that make you need their products!

    • Posted by dreamwatcher1313, at Reply

So much disinformation about so called “life style” diseases. Almost all “knowledge” that people have about metabolic diseases is wrong.

Type 2 diabetes is 100% genetic. If you have one of the multiple gene mutations that cause type 2 diabetes, you will have type 2 diabetes period.
Whether or not you have noticeable symptoms and will need treatment, is a different issue.

Essentially the physical cause of type 2 diabetes is a breakdown in communication between the pancreas and liver.

That being said, weight control and exercise are the two best methods for controlling type 2 diabetes.

Body fat is ONLY produced by excess blood glucose. Since type 2 diabetics generally have higher blood glucose levels, they have a tendency to gain weight which in turn worsens the diabetes which in turn makes them gain weight. One can plainly see the cycle occurring.

Since many people do not know how diabetes type 2 works, I will attempt to give a short description.
      1. Every cell in your body uses glucose as its only fuel. Without it, your cells would die.
      2. Your body produces glucose through absorption in the intestines directly and by your liver with carbohydrates/fats/proteins. One does not generally absorb enough glucose through
the intestines. Because of this your liver acts as sort of a trimmer when it comes to blood glucose levels.
      3. In order for your cells to take in glucose both insulin and glucose need to be present. Insulin acts as a key to allow your cells to absorb the glucose.
      4. With type 2 diabetes the pancreas stops communicating with the liver and the liver continues to produce glucose regardless of blood glucose levels.
      5. In response your pancreas produces more insulin essentially telling your cells to absorb more glucose.
      6. In this state, your cells will reach a point where they cannot absorb any more glucose. In response your cells become resistant to insulin over time. Hence the term “insulin resistance”
      7. Excess blood glucose is converted to fat, hence causing weight gain. Like the other cells in your body, your fat cells also become insulin resistant.

I have decided to use a bit of my personal experience with type diabetes in an effort to show how many stereotypes about diabetics are not true.

About 5 years ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after going to the ER because I thought I was going blind. At first the ER staff thought I was having a stroke and later thought I had late onset type 1 diabetes because I was in a state of ketoacidosis which is common for type 1 but rare in type 2.

I was put on metformin and insulin and taught about proper diet. As a side note, there really is not a “diabetic” diet, it is the same diet the medical profession suggests for everyone who does not have other diet restrictions.
The diet has me eating about TWICE as much as I did before the diabetes diagnoses. I literally have to eat even when I am not hungry.
I am required to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and a bedtime snack.
I have lost about thirty pounds long term eating MORE not less.
The reason? The underlying MEDICAL condition is being treated. By keeping blood glucose levels down, my body does not produce fat.
In fact my H1AC levels are generally in the non-diabetic category. Since treatment, they have been between 5.4 – 5.8. Under 7.0 is generally the goal for diabetics and under 6.0 is considered non-diabetic. (H1AC is a blood glucose test that measures average glucose level over the previous few months)

All this is a short description and there are many more details I would like to get into.
However, as it is, I feel very few will read it and even less will learn anything.
Most people will continue to think that diabetes is only because people are fat and lazy.
I guess it is just easier to blame a person then gain knowledge about a subject.

Maybe I’m completely wrong and you are completely right that this way will work, logically and statistically it doesn’t seem like his ideas would work so I’m giving trump a shot with the republicans because the democrats didn’t fix America enough after the bushes and the Clintons ran the economy into the ground

    • Posted by LivingIsEasyWithEyesClosed, at Reply

I completely agree with you on the democrats, the dems are a joke, but in my opinion the republicans aren’t any better.

Like George Washington, the father of America, said, political parties are a terrible idea. I think it just took America 2 and a half centuries to finally realize that.

kahmaal14 This particular solution is actually the forrect one. The point is simply to either:

a – use govt money and make drugs cheaper
b – use your own money and charge whatever you want

It is literally ‘fiscal responsibility’ by part of the govt.
