" A Canadian mother was sentenced to 3 years behind bars Saturday after her 7-year-old, that was dealing with a serious instance of strep throat, passed away due to the fact that she did not take him to the physician.

Tamara Lovett, 48, of Calgary, was convicted in January of criminal neglect creating fatality of her son Ryan Lovett, according to reports.

" Ryan experienced extremely from this inaction," Justice Kristine Eidsvik said. "He died an unbearable, unneeded fatality."
Ryan was bedridden in your home for 10 days in March 2013. During that time, Lovett provided him dandelion tea as well as oil of oregano to treat his infection.
Ryan's symptoms included puffy lymph nodes, exuding ears and jaundiced eyes at the time of his death, records claimed.

You kill your kid, you go to jail. Ignorance and incompetence is not an excuse. 3 years sounds about right.

    • Posted by John Handcock, at Reply

3 years is way too light imo.

I live in Calgary, she has been in the news here a fair bit. What wasn’t mentioned in this clip is that the mother had a family friend who is a nurse that came to look at the child. The nurse strongly encouraged the family to GO TO THE DOCTOR.

I agree with the jail time she is receiving. We have free health care in Canada. I have lived in Calgary my whole life and never have I had a long wait time at the doctor nor have I ever paid for anything at the doctor. I had strep throat a few times as a kid, with medical attention it is an easily treatable thing.

With this woman going to jail maybe it will make other parents think twice before they decide against taking their kid to the doctor. If you want to treat your own ailments with dandelion tea then that is okay. It is not okay to subject an underage child to those believes when they are unable to take themselves to a doctor.

Thank you for the extra info. 30 months costly was not long enough.

I thought this was negligent homicide, but it’s far worse.

Please tell me she doesn’t have other kids

That nurse should have called CFS.

This was the second such case in Alberta also.
There was a couple from Lethbridge who did the same thing to their child.
This is heartbreaking and I hope that everyone realises that doctors are there to help in time of need especially here in Alberta.

The problem is that the mind of these offenders do not take into consideration the nature of their actions.

A lot of the time, they genuinely believe that they are in the right, up until their child is dead and they live in Limbo and Denial

I wish the mom would have received mental health services because this isn’t “holistic” it’s crazy… Natural treatments work best proactively or immediately at onset of sickness. If the natural stuff isn’t working in the first 2-3 days it’s time for a doctor 💚

Listen to the gynocentric “Progressives” simping for “Mom”. If “Dad” had done something like this, is there any doubt they would be howling for a life sentence? The hypocrisy of the Feminist Left is amazing.

A kid is dead and you’re turning this into a political battle? You’re sick in the head and everything that’s wrong with America. I’m embarrassed you’re an American citizen. Did your mommy abuse you to turn you into a hateful sociopath??? 💩

      @Blob Loblaw

Based on nothing!? Men get sentenced far more often, and for far longer sentences. This bias of the justice system is absolutely immense.

    • Posted by John Handcock, at Reply

      @Divine

Wait, don’t you people do the exact same thing!? Every single time there is footage of a white person being beaten by the cops, there will be dozens of comments that say something like “Well, if that were a black guy….”

I had osteomyelitis in my cervical spine and was in excruciating pain. I went to the doctor who told me it was a stiff neck and told me to take ibuprofen. Three or four days later I’m begging my husband (ex) to take me to the hospital. He said I was exaggerating the pain so he wouldn’t take me. Another day passes and by then my entire body was in pain. I lost control of my bowels and was delirious. I begged to be saved because I knew I’d die if I didn’t get help. He went to work and left me there. At the time I didn’t have a cellphone and couldn’t call 911. I couldn’t move. I went in my kindle and through Facebook messaged my niece and she called my dad. He came over and called 911 the minute he saw me laying on the floor. I was in septic shock by that time and my family was told I would have died if I hadn’t received care within an hour. My organs were failing. I spent 3 months in the hospital, two of those being in ICU on life support. It was the most agonizing pain I have ever felt and I can just imagine what that little boy went through. Just heartbreaking. This was in Oct of 2012 and I’m still dealing with the aftermath of the infection.

    • Posted by Kim Perow, at Reply

BL4CK KN1G8T No, I didn’t make a claim on the doctor because I was told osteomyelitis is hard to diagnose. Add to that, I saw him before I showed signs of infection. No fever or anything.

    • Posted by aditsu, at Reply

“Looking back, I should have had the strength to leave much earlier” – you can say that again; not allowing you to have a cellphone is reason enough by itself. But it’s hard to judge people’s decisions fairly when you don’t walk in their shoes; I heard that it can be hard to get out of abusive relationships.
“I’m still dealing with the aftermath of the infection” – damn, how bad is it? Really wish you can achieve full recovery, or as close to that as possible.

    • Posted by Kim Perow, at Reply

aditsu He slowly started to control me, over the years it got worse and I remember one day it hit me that I had lost myself, my self-esteem was so low that I believed him when he said if I left, no one would ever want me. There’s so much more to the story. As far as my health goes, I’m struggling. The pain all over my body, especially the cervical spine is 24/7. The infection ate away some of the bone. There wasn’t a part of my body that wasn’t affected. I get frequent infections because my immune system is compromised. Don’t get me wrong, I’m blessed to be here. I was very lucky. Thank you for your kindness.

This really saddens me. My father was of the mindset, only the strong survive. I had strep throat, and he wouldn’t take me to the doctor. I know how he suffered. Some people are just not qualified to parent.

She wasn’t just selfish. She was *profoundly stupid.* I don’t know if that’s entirely her fault since most people are borne into their beliefs. Fundamentalist beliefs can be really fucked up. It makes people believe in harsh ideas like *”ultimate sacrifice”* and enduring terrible hardships as a *”test of faith.”* And they make such atrocious decisions FOR their children. The child doesn’t have a say in the matter. That’s really fucked up ’cause an able bodied adult can detect just how bad their OWN health is getting before they get up and decide to *ditch their stupid faith* and take their dire situation to *the qualified professionals that they know exist.* I really don’t know what punishment this woman should have to endure considering how her terrible mistake seems to be related to being profoundly ill-informed. I don’t know if we can say that her *”faith induced stupidity”* -(if you will) is really her fault or if her faulty intelligence equates to any malicious intent.

Letting a child die of infections and organ failure on purpose would probably have resulted in decades if not life in prison. Factoring in ignorance and actual remorse, 3 years is still very generous.

  11. Posted by ziffulmyer, at Reply

Prison isn’t the answer to everything. Mandatory education, classes in critical thinking, rehabilitation ….is a better solution IMO

Children have human rights, they are not anyone’s property. When a legal guardian, biological or not, has failed to uphold their legal responsibility to said child. It is up to society, through the judiciary system to hold that guardian responsible.

Children don’t have human rights. If i can have my son’s foreskin cut off without his conscious knowledge, he doesn’t have rights. Parents can do anything less of child abuse and neglect lol

Try that with your daughter, and see how far you get. Someone is lacking rights, but it’s not kids, at least not half of them.

Sometimes it seems like Cenk never went to law school. One of the key reasons for punishment is deterrence – not just to the actor, but to the public at large. The sentence is a warning to the next mother who decides to use home remedies when their child needs medical attention. Not a single mention of that aspect of the punishment in this entire video. (And yes, I went to law school).

    • Posted by AllGoodThingsNetwork, at Reply

You are arguing specific deterrence – yes, the dead child will deter the mother from future acts. I am talking about general/indirect deterrence, which focuses on general prevention of crime by making examples of specific deviants. The individual actor is not the focus of the attempt at behavioral change, but rather receives punishment in public view in order to deter other individuals from deviance in the future.

    • Posted by Cavecat, at Reply

No, we are talking general deterrence.

    • Posted by AllGoodThingsNetwork, at Reply

Well, I don’t think someone else’s dead child is as much of a deterrent as you personally spending time in jail. My point is, this discussion wasn’t touched upon and Cenk should’ve learned all of this in crim law.

There’s a reason why we live longer than any generation before us – modern medical care. Those foolish people who think ‘we’ll it worked 1,000 years ago so it must still work’ yeah, 1000 years ago when we had no penicillin, no sterile environments, when people lived in their filth and drank from sewer water because we didn’t know it caused disease, when we lived to be 30!

The problem back then was germs.
      Not medicine.

    • Posted by cusp., at Reply

Political Gypsy medicine cures the illness that comes with germs. Germs will be everywhere, forever. Sometimes home remedies work, sometimes medicine made by science works better.

    • Posted by jaycol21, at Reply

When in doubt, go with the science. When not in doubt, go with the science anyway. Trust that a medical doctor knows more about an illness than your great-aunt.

To imply that she didn’t intend for him to die and that his death is punishment enough because she’s very remorseful is just like saying if she was hammered drunk and driving her son home and crashed and he died, his death was punishment enough because she’s remorseful and did not intend for it to happen!

    • Posted by Lobos222, at Reply

or that Son of Sam was innocent because a “dog” told him to do it. The mother deserved time behind bars both as a punishment to her, but also as a deterrent to others and a statement that society will NOT accept such ridiculous defenses.

    • Posted by Bo Johnson, at Reply

IOozeAwesomeness dont think there is a vaccine for strep. Strep is just a bacterial infection. All you need is an anti bacterial. I think the kid dehydrated

    • Posted by IOozeAwesomeness, at Reply

Bo Johnson i was just speaking generally on the refusal of modern medicine. I think its totally different if the woman was doing absolutely nothing to try to aid her son but she was using methods she saw as more beneficial than the side effects of some meds. Same reason why parents choose not to get their kids vaccinated.
