Conservatives say the darnedest things. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"Bill O’Reilly sparked outrage online Tuesday for what he described as the “hidden reason” behind calls to abolish the Electoral College.

“This is all about race,” the conservative commentator said on his Fox News show. “The left sees white privilege in America as an oppressive force that must be done away with. Therefore white working class voters must be marginalized.”

He later added that liberals believe “white men have set up a system of oppression and that system must be destroyed … The left wants power taken away from the white establishment and they want a profound change in the way America is run.”

O’Reilly’s admission of “white privilege” and the “white establishment” struck a chord with Twitter users, and discussion on the topic became a trending topic overnight.”*

TYT fails to understand why the electoral college exists

If a Democrat won the electoral vote, but lost the popular vote, it would
      have been the right decision.

Nowhere in the US Constitution is the word democracy

I know, we need to stop listening to Muslims and the liberals who worship
them! Restore the constitution & bill of rights as the law of the land.
Restore basic human rights to straight white Christian men and stop the
irrational liberal hate of everything they deem not worthy of their Satanic
      ways.

The US is a representational constitutional democracy with a strong degree
of direct democracy (e.g., state ballots that legalized marijuana.)

Representational democracy includes both personal and regional
representation. All 3 branches of American government employ different
means to ensure both personal and regional representation.

Yes, the US was not originally a democracy. But Abraham Lincoln cast
America in this context and championed the concept of modern democracy:
government of, by and for the people. (Something that only really existed
during the New Deal era which began with FDR and was ended by Reagan.)

A: This is an argument from tradition, which is a logical fallacy. Your
point is not valid. B: If this isn’t an argument, but simply “you stating a
fact” (which is unfortunately a common cop out that stupid people make when
they are trying to be “cute”) then: The average human has almost five
fingers on each hand. There, isn’t stating facts fun? C: We have these
things in the constitution called “amendments”, maybe you have heard of
      them.

conservatives love the electoral college because they understand we’re a
republic not a true democracy if we were a true democracy the only states
that would ever matter would be coastal states and the forty other states
would be irrelevant. and i love how people are saying she should be
president because she won the popular vote the difference she won by is not
even 1 percent of our countries population.

    • Posted by Barry, at Reply

Tito Martinez The other fourty states already don’t matter. How do you not
see that? The only states that matter are the swing-states.

Your statistics are laughable and irrelevant. What did Trump win? 26% of
the entire country’s vote according to your pathetic logic?

    • Posted by Classical Liberal, at Reply

      Tito Martinez no we don’t

    • Posted by homer422, at Reply

You love it bc it gives you more power than the number of voters would
      normally allow.

Wait, don’t states have some sort of sovereignty in our federalism? I might
be wrong, but I thought the electoral college system is designed to afford
states with low populations a voice in the outcome of a national election.
But then again I don’t know much about such things.

    • Posted by Andy Dominguez, at Reply

Apparently you know more about this than TYT.

    • Posted by homer422, at Reply

Those are called senators. Other than that it should be one person one
vote. By your logic we should just go back to only rich ppl being allowed
      to vote.

    • Posted by Simon Winn, at Reply

Under article 2 of the constitution, the state is given the rights in how
the electoral college will vote in their state, the winner for the states
electoral votes can be determined by a coin flip, if the state wants.

Conservatives are the biggest hypocrites in the US since 1776. They love
whatever serves them whenever it serves them. If the Electoral College
caused them to lose, you’d see them raging and on the brinks of seceding
their states from the Union, but when it serves them, they start
worshipping the system. Lol! Conservatives are idiots!

We aren’t a direct democracy, please stop talking about the popular vote as
    if it’s a valid argument.

    • Posted by Kevin Montrond, at Reply

Lies spread all over the internet about popular vote shows it does matter.
Conservatives feel the need to lie about it.

    • Posted by Kj Mj, at Reply

Direct democracy means people vote for the laws directly, you dumbass. The
indirect democracy would be voting for the president by congress or senate.

    • Posted by Ron Waller, at Reply

+Kevin Montrond: my guess is that they are not lying about thinking Trump
got the popular vote. They are simply misinformed. As are liberal idiots
who can’t comprehend that representational democracy includes both personal
      and regional representation.

    • Posted by TheRepublicOfUngeria, at Reply

Cenk and John aren’t saying we live in a democracy, they are saying we live
in a Republic whose method of electing a president is unjust, therefore we
      ought to change it.

The argument that you are implying here is an invalid argument, because it
      contains an is/ought fallacy.

Isn’t democracy just a form of mob rule? Can someone please define the term
    for me.

Thomas Jefferson absolutely never said that. That is some made up bull. In
fact when you research that quote all you will find are historians who
specifically state that there is no evidence he ever said any such thing.

    • Posted by Peter S, at Reply

You are correct about a direct democracy being mob rule. The US is a *”constitutionally
limited representative democratic republic”* which is democracy with
limitations on the will of the mob over the rights of the individual, and a
group form of representation through elected or selected representatives.

Electoral College protects the many flyover states we have. Otherwise
candidates would entirely ‘fly over’ them and just campaign in large
    cities.

    • Posted by TheMeister96, at Reply

Why would we try to protect the largest amount of land from being left out
rather than the largest number of people? Not to mention the fact that as
is the electoral college creates a situation where only swing states
matter, thus both more people and more states become entirely irrelevant.

    • Posted by Liberater4589, at Reply

Bob1128 that’s why only 13 states get campaigned in?

Nick Balis Why does the right have a hardon for defending the electoral
college? Cenk puts on the mocking voice because it seems like the logical
thing would be to favor a system that actually represents a democracy.

    • Posted by Nick Balis, at Reply

+Kevin Galt I actually agree with the concept of getting rid of the
electoral college, but the time to raise a stink about it is not right
after the candidate you voted for lost. It just comes off as being a sore
loser. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but TYT to my knowledge did not
gripe about the EC before the election. Complaining about the rules after
the game is over is lame.

And I realize that if Trump had won the popular vote but had lost the
election, right-wingers would be griping about the EC.

    • Posted by Nick Balis, at Reply

+Kevin Galt I believe this was the fifth time the popular vote winner lost
the election, so if it hasn’t been changed by now, it probably never will.
Maybe this election will serve as a reminder to the Democrats that they
      can’t ignore middle America.
