Democrats desire the Labor Department to trash brand-new policies that hurt dining establishment workers. Ana Kasparian, Mark Thompson, Maytha Alhassen, the hosts of The Young Turks, simplify. Inform us just what you believe in the remark area listed below.

" Democrats on Capitol Hillside are advising the Labor Division to ditch a contentious proposition that would certainly make it less complicated for dining establishment owners to redistribute or maintain their employees' tips.

In a letter Tuesday to Labor Assistant Alex Acosta, 24 Senate Democrats claimed the firm needed to bail on the step due to the fact that officials "hid proof from the general public" forecasting a significant loss in money for millions of tipped staff members throughout the country.

The Labor Department "is requiring via a law that would certainly take loan from the pockets of low-wage employees and, even worse, it covered the potentially disastrous impacts from employees and advocates," the legislators created.

They called it "a raw instance of exactly how much the Trump Administration is willing to go to quell business interests at the cost of working households."

Recently, Bloomberg BNA's Ben Penn reported that Labor Department leaders had subdued an inner analysis showing workers can shed billions of dollars in tips if the firm enacted the policy as recommended. The authorities guided staffers to fine-tune their approach to make sure that the estimates would not be so startling, inning accordance with Penn."

Just do away with tips. Such a dumb system. Just pay the waiters and stop guilting customers into tipping. Menu prices will increase? So what? Now I’m not obligated to tip, so it works out the same. Waiters won’t be as motivated? Every other country waiters work without obligatory tips and their services are fine. It’s called doing your job.

You idjits have obviously never been to Europe.

    • Posted by facefister69, at Reply

Wow, you’ve visited every single restaurant in every single country in Europe and they all had bad service?

    • Posted by M0ebius, at Reply

Listenbuddy1 The only difference between Europe and America is American waiters spend an eternity making small talks with you pretending they are your friend so you will throw a few extra dollars their way. All I am asking is to just treat waiters as you would literally any other service profession.

    • Posted by Listenbuddy1, at Reply

M0ebius In Europe you’re lucky if your waiter shows up, then they act like they’re doing you a favor to wait on you. Go to New York where you get service with a smile.

    • Posted by facefister69, at Reply

The reason the waiter didn’t show up and then acted like they were doing you a favour was likely because people usually order their own meals at Burger King.

    • Posted by Rebecca Garrett, at Reply

starbucks lost (in court, if i remember right) and the actual servers had some kind of settlement payed out…tips are gifts…funny how he is still taxing tips…now he is putting the determination of where they go in the hands of the owners…they are not the owners…they are GIFTS to the servers

Why is this video entitled, “Democrats Finally Fighting For Workers?” It only mentions one Democrat, and says nothing at all about any of them doing anything about this rule change. Is the title clickbait or is this a bad edit?

Anyway, I will answer the question; no Neoliberal is fighting FOR workers. They abandoned labor in favor of Wall Street decades ago, which is why most workers who were formally Democrats either became Republicans or independents. It is also why the Justice Democrats had to be formed; to try to fix the failing Democratic Party’s Neoliberal problem from within. We’ll see how that goes at the polls later this year, but I’m pretty sure the ship has sailed for Democrats and we will have to establish a new progressive labor party in America before we see any politician actually FIGHT FOR workers. Then, you’ll see both the Democrats and the Republicans scrambling to suck up to workers, as if that had always been part of their plans. Stay tuned.

How did servers survive before this was enacted during the Obama years? I seem to remember that they did not like the idea in the first place that they were going to have to split all of the tips that were given to them with everybody else in the store. I believe that a restaurant can survive or fail based on its own individual policies.

  9. Posted by Michael Coville, at Reply

I hope all the servers out there, and there are many millions of them, remember this the next time there is an election. On top of all the other horrific policies the Republicans have pushed against their own voters’ interests, this one alone should cost them the majorities they enjoy in both houses.

There is very little evidence that tips incentivize servers to be better workers. They mostly seem to reinforce stereotypes, making servers cater more to rich-looking white men and give worse service to black women. How much a server earns in tips is strongly correlated to how physically attractive the server is, and only very weakly correlated to the level of service.

    • Posted by keggerous, at Reply

“They mostly seem to reinforce stereotypes, making servers cater more to rich-looking white men and give worse service to black women”

I think a citation is in order for a claim like this. Also, if black WOMEN DO TIP LESS, WOULD THAT JSUTIFY TENDING TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO WHITE MALE CUSTOMERS?

I’d like to see an owner retain employees whilst confiscating tips. Again TYT shows just how business illiterate they are.

    • Posted by Andrew Myers, at Reply

Since the tips are collected together in one pot and then split with the employees, how would the employees know if the owner was or was not skimming off the top?

    • Posted by Am radio and mom, at Reply

thomas Hooper Why do you watch then Mr wannabe ? They’re a hell of lot more fun successful than you …. no doubt.

    • Posted by thomas Hooper, at Reply

Nothing wrong with wanting to tax and regulate unregulated/ untaxed income!
This fear that owners would retain tips is laughable, especially since turnover is so high in this industry!

    • Posted by thomas Hooper, at Reply

Am radio and mom , tyt isn’t the success story you make then to be! Instead of attacking me, attack my argument!

Also stop projecting your insecurities. Trump is a lot more successful than all of TYT combined… following your “logic”…

I’m fine with this as long as they raise their minimum wage to make up their loss. Of course, they won’t do that so…I’m not really fine with this.

  19. Posted by Jonathan Holmes, at Reply

Tipping is a garbage system that the corporations created in order to ensure that their employees would focus their anger about their pay on the customers instead of their employers. With that being said, I don’t understand how it’s legal to take away tips from your employee. That should be illegal. I don’t understand how it’s even legal to ask how much your employee was tipped! That should be illegal. I don’t understand why it’s even legal to pay someone less than minimum wage just because they got a tip from someone. That should be illegal. Bernie Sanders was right in saying that there should be no exceptions for minimum wage laws.

    • Posted by Jason A, at Reply

Jonathan Holmes right? Tips are such a right wing thing. Why not raise the minimum wage?

Restaurant owners are far more poor than the waiters.

    • Posted by Chavy Cash, at Reply

Aw3someOpZ Just about anyone CAN set up a restaurant. Most owners close their doors with an ungodly amount of debt. I never said it was OK to steal tips from workers. And saying that “profit margins are low” is an understatement. In the US the average restaurant has a 4% “profit” (not real profit) margin. So if you pay the $25 bill $1 or that is gross profit (fake profit because that $1 goes to taxes, interest, overhead, you name it). Most restaurant owners never see a profit, and the one who do wait on average 5 years to break even. The point I’m trying to make is that the evil, rich, greedy restaurant owners are not so evil, rich and greedy, In fact their workers are far, FAR better off.
