Do Abortions Damage Women’s Mental Health?

Many conservatives believe abortions mentally destroy the women who have them. All research shows they couldn't be more wrong. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"…But a new study published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that women who have abortions are not at greater risk of experiencing depression or anxiety. In fact, researchers found that — wait for it, wait for it — it is denying women abortions that is associated with poor mental health outcomes.

“What we find is that denying women abortion has negative consequences to their mental health and well-being, and we find no evidence of emerging mental health problems after an abortion,” said lead author Antonia Biggs, a researcher at the University of California, San Francisco research group Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health.

Many studies have already reported finding no evidence of negative abortion-related mental health effects. When the American Psychological Association reviewed the relevant research, it concluded that there was “no credible evidence that a single elective abortion of an unwanted pregnancy in and of itself causes mental health problems for adult women.” But the current study improves upon the methodology of that past research, according to Biggs, and provides the best evidence yet that abortion doesn’t cause mental harm.

The researchers recruited and interviewed 956 women from 30 different abortion clinics in 21 U.S. states. They were first interviewed a week after seeking out an abortion, and then semi-annually for five years. The researchers primarily focused on comparing two different groups: women who had an abortion just short of the clinic’s gestational age limit and women who were denied an abortion because they were just past the clinic’s gestational age limit."*

“They may not choose to get pregnant, but their careless stupid reality
did” women get pregnant all the time while on contraceptive. Also there is
rape, or the womens health could be in danger if she gives birth. They
cannot support the child financially and know it could be scarring for the
child to be raised in a care home and not with a loving family too. And
don’t say adoption as most unwanted children just end up in care homes
      neevr to be adopted.

You commenting that there are millions of women that don’t approve of
abortions is a pointless comment that doesn’t prove you right because the
same can be said for the countering argument. If you don’t agree with
abortions fine you are entitled to your belief. What you’re not entitle to
is forcing your beliefs on those who don’t share them with you. No one is
forcing women to have abortions therefore those who believe that abortion
is a right are not really imposing their believes unto you or anyone else
but themselves. On the other hand you want to force all women to have
children because of your belief without caring what the consequences are to
those individuals or why they might have resorted to such an option in the
first place. Birth control doesn’t always work, birth defects happen,
complications, risk factors, rape, financial state, and age are just some
of the many factors that can be part of the reason for people to get
abortions. There are plenty of women who have abortions and later on have
children. If those women didn’t have an abortion there is no guarantee that
the actual child they have currently would exist. Children are not a
punishment to be forced upon people. Instead of railing on something that
you believe is murder you should be against what is murder, like war in
which not only soldiers die but also innocent civilians most of which are
women and children. What I found ironic in your comments is how you pretend
to be pro-life but then tell someone to kill themselves because they hold a
      different opinion than you.

Children are not a punishment to be forced upon people………….I agree,
children are not a punishment, they are a precious gift…………….What
you’re not entitled to is forcing your beliefs on those who don’t share
them with you…………..Correct, millions of women are against child
murder and do not want your satanic beliefs forced upon them. They also
believe that abortion is NOT a woman’s right……………Birth control
doesn’t always work………..Correct, but as responsible adults people
need to take responsibility for their actions. If a man impregnates a woman
he is told to “man up” and take responsibility for his actions. Since we
are all equal now it’s time to tell women if they cant keep their pussies
in their pants they are going to have to woman up and have that baby and
give it to the father and pay him child support for 18 years and put her in
prison if she fails to pay. There that wasn’t to hard to tear apart.

“I simply value himan life more than the life of an animal.” I agree when
it comes to fully grown people who can survive outside of someone elses
      body. But why before?

“a baby will eventually reach that brain power, you just cut it off before
then.” So you are making the argument that we are killing a future human to
be born then? Wouldn’t not having sex also kill possible humans who could
be? I mean, not every possible human can be born. For example me being born
might have taken the place of other possible fertilized eggs that could
have grown into someone else in the 9 months I was in my mother. By being
there myself I prevented them from living.
In a more twisted way, if a woman gets pregnant from a rape and gives
birth, then not raping that women would have killed that human to be born
in the future. By these strange standards rape could actually be a
      justified way to save lives…

Unless the specie is close to extinction, which humans are very far from,
can you explain to me why we should make an effort to save possible humans
who could be in the future at the cost of the health and comfort of humans
      who are already here?

And on another note, do you think compatible donors should be forced to
give bone marrow or other parts of their body (given the procedure will
most likely not kill them)? Because you seam to imply the right to your own
body stops if it can save a life.

    • Posted by Michael, at Reply

+Joe David Well if you value life that much you shouldn’t jerk off without

Overpopulation is a myth. There are still large amounts of land in the
world that remain uninhabited, and in some countries, the birth rate
isn’t more than the death rate. But even if it was a problem, killing
babies before they are born is a very poor solution.

Here are real solutions to over population

Eating lower on the food chain
More efficient community and agricultural planning
      Taller buildings
      Living underground
      Artificial islands for growing crops
Colonization of deserts around the world
      Colonization of planets

Also, using over population to justify abortion is nothing more than an
excuse. No woman aborts a child she wants because of this.

The only reason women abort their children is because they don’t want them.

We meticulously control the breeding of our domestic animals, and yet human
women are given grief for wanting to control their own reproduction. In
other words, a woman farmer can decide when and if her pigs and cows can
reproduce, but she’s not allowed to decide when and if she can reproduce.
    Think about that.

The only woman who is not allowed to decide when and if she can reproduce
is a rape victim. Otherwise, she decided to have sex, she decided with whom
to have sex, and she decided to have unsafe sex. If the result of those
three choices is pregnancy then she is completely responsible.

So let’s see on illegal immigration we’re not supposed to punish the
children for the sins of their parents, however, with unwanted pregnancy
it’s ok to punish the child with the death penalty. Got it, makes perfect
      sense.

      1. Biology. Gestation happens in a woman’s own body – it’d be grossly
immoral to force her to abort to comply with father’s wishes. So, she gets
      to decide.

      2. If men were allowed to opt out of parental responsibility
post-conception (financial abortion) the state would likely have to pick up
the tab, and they’d rather not. They’d much rather make both parents pay.

      3. If financial abortion was an option for men, arguably the pendulum would
swing too far the other way – women would bear all the cost of pregnancy or
abortion while men would bear absolutely none.
