Joe Manchin took a seat for an interview with The Young Turks. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, simplifies. Tell us just what you assume in the comment area below.

" Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W. Va.) defended his record during an at times controversial meeting with a dynamic news outlet as he seeks to shore up his left flank in advance of a tough Senate reelection proposal.

Manchin sat down with The Young Turks' Cenk Uygur Tuesday morning on the site's subscription-only streaming solution, where Manchin defended his voting record that's been rated as one of the most traditional for a Democrat in the Senate.

" We are an item of the West Virginia atmosphere with some difficult times … I'm fiscally liable as well as socially caring," Manchin claimed." *.

Have you ever seen CNN, MSNBC or Fox News showing graphics and facts to debate politicians? NOPE! He thinks TYT will just ask questions and move on with the next one like the MSM.

Whether he knows who funds him or not, those associated with him do, and no doubt steer him in the “correct” direction

    • Posted by James Tarkington, at Reply

Ind Aus Not at all. It’d take way too much time/energy/labor for any staff to keep track of donations in order to prepare a member of congress for votes. They will have political ramifications for sure and they’ll think about industries generally, because different industries are bigger or smaller in their state and provide more or less jobs or whatever, but no staffer has ever said “you gotta vote no on bill-X because corporation-Z gave us a check last cycle.” That conversation does not happen. You wanna see the worst of this system in action, go read Robert Caro’s book on Lyndon Johnson’s days building power. Bags of cash and no accountability; who knows where it went but Dems took it and put it to work to win and then Johnson birthed the Great Society legislation years later to help the poor. Political decisions aren’t always tied to donations, because politicians want to avoid the appearance of impropriety. They simply don’t know on a personal level where the money comes from. A staffer vets the donor (though, usually not very thoroughly and the goal is just to make sure it wouldn’t look too bad to take their money) and the donor might get a handshake at a cocktail party and 15 seconds to sell their favorite issue (which is near-immediately forgotten by the member of Congress, as another handshake is incoming already).

    • Posted by Ind Aus, at Reply

Ok, well lets say that’s the case. Maybe it’s just the revolving door then, where politicians know if they help a certain industry they’ll receive a delayed bribe, i.e. a high paying board position with their company, or showers of cash for speeches etc. Either way is corrupt whether legal or illegal. And yeah, maybe there are exceptions as there are with most rules

    • Posted by Livid, at Reply

Yes! I always wondered why they don’t do that. Joe was left dumbstruck.

Manchin doesn’t care where the money is coming from as long as it is coming, just like TYT and Cenk.

In 2014, Cenk received US$4 million investment from Roemer, Robinson, Melville & Co., LLC, a private equity firm led by former Louisiana Governor and 2012 Republican candidate Buddy Roemer. I bet this time around its someone from DNC side.

Not to be preachy but money isn’t the root of all evil; it’s — as the bible says — THE LOVE of money that is the root of all evil.

True; bartering began somewhere. But the desire or need to acquire goods is older than bartering.

Strange how when faced with the choice of being outed as either stupid or a liar that many people go with the former.

    • Posted by GodRustang, at Reply

Republicans love stupid, that’s why they vote for it every chance they get. It’s honestly rare to see republicans vote for anyone who seems smart, they want smarmy, charming, and dumb as a bag of bricks.

In politics you lose nothing by being considered dumb by Democrats.

And don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of smart Republican politicians…. but they don’t mind when the media makes them look dumb.

  17. Posted by Robert House, at Reply

Cenk you should have asked him something along the lines of “do you think these corporations give you hundreds of thousands of dollars out of the kindness of their hearts?”

    • Posted by Cokez Z., at Reply

Yes!! I hope Cenk reads this.

The interview was horrible. To sum it up for you Cenk essentially let Manchin hold his testicles with his left hand and massaged them gently with the tips of his fingers with his right hand. When Cenk wanted to speak up or call him out Manchin would just squeeze a little bit harder and Cenk would shut up. It was brutal watching. Cenk is so sad & pathetic.

    • Posted by Peace Dog, at Reply

Internet trolls have no place calling anyone sad and pathetic. They are pretty much the lowest of the low on that scale.

i couldn’t agree with you more, Cenk was weak af.

    • Posted by Ange Baker, at Reply

Cenk allowed him to make it clear what his stance was. And in essence, Cenk didn’t really need to speak up, because Manchin was, on his own, making himself look adequately slimy. This wasn’t an interview all about whose voice is louder, it showed how quickly Manchin felt the need to be on defense against the facts, and all of his shaky excuses weren’t doing himself any favors.
