" Among one of the most essential showing off occasions of the 20th century occurred at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas, on September 20, 1973. On the day, Riggs showed up in the field on a rickshaw drawn by five scantily dressed ladies as an 80-piece band played "Jesus Christ Super star." King got in, Cleopatra-style, on a gold throne birthed up by four bare-chested men.".

Andrew Shaw, on the burden of proof, it applies to all claims. If you assert that the wage gap is a myth you are making a positive claim that requires evidence.

The rational position is to either provide evidence that it’s a myth or simply state, “I don’t believe in the wage gap because I am not aware of sufficient evidence to justify that belief.”

    • Posted by Phoebe, at Reply

Controversy Owl, people who don’t believe in Santa and Unicorns only carry a burden of proof if they make a claim about them. For example, if you say “Santa is a myth” you need evidence that Santa is a myth. First define what you mean by Santa and myth, then show how Santa meets the criteria for a myth.

1, 2 and 4.) The issue is that you have two arguments with the same conclusion. One was based on circular reasoning.

Let’s only consider the PEW research and the conclusion it justifies then.

3.) I don’t know how much of nurture vs nature is involved in women’s choices, but I would say it is certainly both. It’s not crazy to say that it is largely nurture, either, but it is still their choice.

I think that women should be paid maternity leave, but if it affects her job, such as a diminished customer base from being away from an exchange, then that’s tough.

5.) Those are assumptions that are inferred from the perceptions of humans, with no specific information. It is _possible_, though.

I’m left wing but some of the arguments put forth by some of my fellow left wingers make me face-palm. They are the reason that we are made objects of ridicule so much. Left wing values are actually good. Looking out for one another. A safety net. All in. Team work is left wing in nature. But regressives do our cause more harm than good.

omg women are being paid less in everything, funny how nobody mentions experience and the value some male actors bring and therefore have to be paid more, even funnier is how nobody remembers modeling when this topic is brought, how come male models are not being paid the same hmm, only a problem when it happens to women I assume.

    • Posted by OodlesOfSpoodles, at Reply

Ann Nee you understand that the pay gap is about earnings, not wages right? if you think a disparity in average earnings proves wage discrimination, then yoi dont understand anything.

      And what about porn actors?

  7. Posted by G. Gavin, at Reply

Getting millions and still complaining. Sorry for not feeling bad for you, nevertheless, co-workers should not have to take a “pay cut” to give you equal pay. Its not helping for it allows the company to NOT pay, similar to “tipping”.

    • Posted by anko Mitarashi, at Reply

      G. Gavin I think it’s the principle of the think. (consider this a thought experiment) we’re both equally ranked actors with equal roles in a movie and the director says I’m giving him 12 million and you 6 million. you’d probably at least be curious as to why I’m getting 2X what you’re getting, nevermind the fact that you’re getting a multi million dollar contract. Now is she getting paid less just for being a woman is the real debate (probably not).

    • Posted by TCt83067695, at Reply

you’re not a fan of tipping?

    • Posted by Keeper Nod, at Reply

    • Posted by G. Gavin, at Reply

I understand that, its just if you (actor) subsidizes me (actor) then it allows the company to underpay someone and keep extra dollars for themselves. If we keep doing that, why should the company pay equally, which they should anyways.

    • Posted by elessal, at Reply

Male led movies make more money in the box office, therefore, they make more money for the studio and the directors/producers. Therefore, if one is expected to be paid based upon worth, it is perfectly rational that male actors should make more than female actors, on average.

    • Posted by playandrepeat, at Reply

how did she contribute less? do tell.

    • Posted by types10000, at Reply

My statement was in relation to the concept of ‘Pay Equity’ versus ‘Pay Equality’. A slight difference in terminology that denotes a tonal shift away from ‘Liberalism, Meritocracy and Equality of Opportunity’ and towards ‘Progressivism, Collectivism and Equality of Outcome’.

In regard to this specific case, the studio’s valuation of her would have involved a number of factors including:
      – How well known she is (size of fanbase).
      – Acting talent.
      – Screen time.
      – Prevalence and influence within the franchise.
      .etc

Her lower pay corresponds to perceived deficiencies in the above compared to her fellow co-stars.

      That’s a lot of self-fulfilling bullshit. Maybe it’s true, maybe it isn’t.

The way to ensure it’s true is for ALL leads in films is to make the same up front with some cut of the grosses. That way everybody earns based on how well their film does at the box-office without having to make embarrassing blanket statements like yours.

A $50 million film pays its “stars” of any gender $5 million up front with X% of grosses.

A$100 million film pays its “stars” of any gender $10 million up front with X% of grosses. etc. Easy solution.

I’m not inclined to worry that one rich person isn’t making as much as another rich person because of their genitals.

Wait so she knows all this but hasn’t even brought it up with her boss? It’s kind of hard to tell if that’s sexism or a boss getting away with paying an employee the least amount he can. If her fiance has pressured him for raises and higher pay but she never has then he’s probably going to get the raises even if that isn’t fair. But I don’t know her situation so can’t really comment past that.
