Faithless Electors Come Up Short Against Trump

There was a movement to get members of the electoral college to be "faithless electors" against Donald Trump. It failed. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"Republican Donald Trump prevailed in U.S. Electoral College voting on Monday to officially win election as the next president, easily dashing long-shot hopes by a small movement of detractors to block him from gaining the White House.

Trump garnered more than the 270 electoral votes required to win, even as at least half a dozen U.S. electors broke with tradition to vote against their own state’s directives, the largest number of “faithless electors” seen in more than a century.

A core of Democratic activists around the country had hoped to convince Republicans to cross lines and vote for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who won the nationwide popular vote on Nov. 8.

In the end, however, more Democrats than Republicans split with their party. Four Democratic electors voted for someone other than Clinton, while two Republicans turned their backs on Trump."*

No she didn’t. Trump won the most popular votes by states. The national
popular vote isnt a thing. It’s just the total number when you combine all
the states together, which mean NOTHING legally or constitutionally. It’s
as pointless as saying that Hillary won the female popular vote. Neither
      exist.

California is heavily democratic, you’re talking bullshit if you think
sociopathic fraudster Trump would’ve won there. Trump just lost the popular
vote by a massive margin. That will always remain true no matter what lies
he or his supporters try to tell.

The funniest thing is how Trump has already broken many promises to his
supporters…that’s what happen when you elect a pathological liar and
      dirty conman. LOL.

    • Posted by wesley roche, at Reply

Gales99 can any of you who respond read? He lost California by 4 million
votes. Essentially never even campaigned in California after the primaries.
Yeah you same people said he’d never win Michigan, Wisconsin, and
Pennsylvania. I’m sure with some campaigning he wouldnt have won California
still, but would have received more votes. I know a lot of people here in
California that don’t take part in elections because it’s so blue here.

Yeah broken promises 🙄. We have the house, senate and presidency with soon
to be appointed republican justices. We’re doing just fine over here.
      👌

About what you said about Trump voters, I don’t mean this the wrong way,
but I’m glad to hear they are. I hate it when people refuse to open their
eyes to stuff. They shouldn’t feel sorry for themselves, they should be
pissed off for being lied to.

America is a republic by design and that’s the way it should stay. You say

+Libertarian Exodus I’m talking about real elections, not fake elections to
      maintain power.

Italy, USA, France etc. All have a constitution, they all have elections.

Israel, UK, Canada don’t have a constitution but still hold general
      elections.

Whether or not you have a constitution is irrelevant to being a democracy.

The USA is a republic, but it is also a democracy. It just has an very old
system with various safety clauses built in.

    • Posted by CRAZYGUNDAMOTAKU, at Reply

They shouldn’t but at the same time states with extremely large populations
shouldn’t have more of a say than most of the country for a number of
reasons. If you actually think about it most of the country is comprised of
these small states with small populations and states like NY and Cali are
the minority but if the election process was purely democratic those large
states could bully the rest of the country every election with little to no
difficulty at all and how is that fair? NY and Cali issues aren’t Wisconsin
and Maine issues but without the electoral college those latter states
would be grossly irrelevant for no other reason than the fact that those
large minority states simply have more people in them.Is it fair for a
handful of large departments to have total control over the fate of a
company despite smaller departments being the majority? that’s the way I
      see it.

    • Posted by Jonathan Vasquez, at Reply

If it was true that most of america livid in rural america areas you
wouldn’t worry about NY or California always dictating the election. Also
in a direct democracy everyone’s vote would counts regardless of what state
your from because what your forgetting is the fact that even within these
traditionally red states theirs millions of people voting democrat but end
up having their votes ignored because we have a winner takes all system,
and your also ignoring the fact that trump barely won the swing states
while NY and California dished out enough votes against him to give Hillary
a major lead in the popular vote, but even without California and NY you
would still have close election because you’d also have to disregard the
millions of people in those two state that voted for trump. Lastlysmall
states are already over represented in our system through congress and
their own governors so your argument holds no weight to it
