So the best solution is to hire illegal immigrants? That’s a bit short sighted isn’t it.

    • Posted by Colon Powell, at Reply

Chubbybear the Undying That’s how a capitalist economy works. You need sub-classes of people (like illegal immigrants, refugees and migrants) who are willing to get exploited to see THEIR children climbing up the social letter not themselves.

Time to force Trump voters to pick those fruit and vegetables off the field for minimum wage.Gotta have food on the table before its price increase.

    • Posted by Cerberus Hex, at Reply

If your going to force something why not just force a wage that makes the job attractive. Don’t you think its odd that the people working to feed you get paid way under a starvation wage?

    • Posted by Ned Flanders, at Reply

Sure after the farmer pays a fair wage with breaks issued by law.

IAN m who says they aren’t willing to do these jobs? Ana? lol. One study by a president of a farming company? No bias there.

    • Posted by generationofswine, at Reply

RT  Its a chicken/egg thing. If Americans could or would do those jobs,  why aren’t they doing them now?  How are Americans who live in the city going to work in rural areas, and where do they go when the  season’s over. Are they supposed to make themselves homeless so they can relocate to a staff accommodation on a farm and  earn less than minimum wage?  The problem  with facile “common sense” ideas is that life is complicated.  there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.  I’m not suggesting that Trump supporters care about solutions, but why should an entire industry be gutted and millions of peoples’ lives turned upside down just so you can feel satisfied that brown people are suffering?” BTW its’ not a sign of bias that she only uses one study.  The immigration issue is complicated and has been studied to death.  The ideas that make racists happy don’t work, they fail to make anything cheaper or safer, and they never take consequences and long term planning into account.  The left has this crazy idea that complicated issues should be handled by experts: where do you think the studies come from. Solving problems and resolving conflict is not the right’s field.  They don’t care what works, only how they feel.  There is no immigrant crisis, legal or illegal, but the right is sure there must be because they brand all foreigners as criminals unless they are white.

    • Posted by IAN m, at Reply

The problem is such an issue that farms are having to hire legal foreign workers to fill positions im reading on Google news . That’s because Americans are unwilling to do those jobs plus where are all these farm workers going to come from? Some of these States don’t even have the population to fill those positions . So go ahead and stick your head in the sand but that’s not helping anyone.

Oh and you do realize Illegal immigration “under Obama” is the lowest its been since the 60’s? Meanwhile Trump wants to spend 30 Billion on a wall that’s not even needed. America also produces more then it used too yet their are fewer jobs due to automation not illegal’s or foreign workers. So well the conservative media is yelling Illegal this and that their ignoring more complex issues that face our Western society.

Ahhh having trouble finding labor to exploit? Have you tried paying Americans a FAIR wage to do that work?

    • Posted by generationofswine, at Reply

Media Matters   Now you’re talking crazy.  I bet the solution will be a very expensive program that brings in temp workers, and monitors them like they are convicts, and then banishes them from ever entering the country again.  it will only cost taxpayers a few million per worker, but the farms and businesses will get to pay below minimum wage.  The Trump retards will be happy with the persecution, the farmer can increase prices anyway, using the new rules as an excuse, and the taxpayer can pay the bill.

    • Posted by Media Matters, at Reply

Somehow the Democratic party got on the wrong side of the labor issue.

    • Posted by Media Matters, at Reply

+Zach Couch you can’t reason with Hillary’s brainwashed pets. In their twisted minds NO amount of money would make ANYONE do something they don’t want to do (except drug dealers, prostitutes, boxers, emergency workers, garbage men, clerical workers, waitresses, etc)

    • Posted by Media Matters, at Reply

+generationofswine Hey are you a Democratic consultant because that’s are great idea!!! Instead of paying American ag workers $16/ hr and benefits, well just get robots….to watch the illegal workers!!! We wont have to pay payroll tax on the illegals and we can depreciate each $million robotic foreman! That means no capital gains tax so it’s bipartisan!!!

Aaaaa…… Stop breaking the law. Maybe then your workers wouldn’t have to run off. If you cant get Americans raise your wages until the job is attractive. Thats what every other business has to do if they get workers. If $9 wasn’t enough raise it more. Also doesn’t TYT back the fight for $15? So why do they do a 180 on this issue here?

Nobody knew it was so complicated!

    • Posted by roger Brownfield, at Reply

+Ispike73 I agree make it an 8 hour a day job that pays 15 bucks an hour with benefits two breaks and a 45 minute lunch and the white people will show up but your box of cereal is going to cost us all 15 dollars now. The only reason poor white working folk don’t want it is IT ISN’T better work and pay than waiting around for the coal mine to open again for your 75k starting job. As long as we have petro dollars, white people dont need to adjust to the economy. So we have fruit farms without workers and coal mining towns and old industry towns with bitter white people demanding their 75k a year manual labor jobs back, living in the past. Trump promised to control the economy for them. When the answer is …go pick some fruit white people, that’s where the unskilled labor market is these days especially if you want to run the Mexicans off. Otherwise you’ll be paying 15 bucks for your cereal while waiting for that coal mine job to open back up. And nobody talks about how the robots are probably going to do all the coal mining and factory jobs anyway if they ever open back up at all. Idiocracy is here. White people with their petro dollars makes a special kind of stupid.

  12. Posted by Sandra Nelson, at Reply

White folks don’t want to do farm work. It’s brutal, exhausting, dirty and painful. It can also be mind numbingly boring. It isn’t about the money. You could offer white college students the sum of a year’s tuition for five months work, and they would say no. So who else is going to do all the dirty work that white people won’t do?

…What do you think we do in Nebraska? All I see are whites doing farm work, and some Hispanic immigrants here and there. But it is mainly white farmers doing the work themselves.

  13. Posted by Jesse Torres, at Reply

Here’s my question/opinion/understanding of this issue.

If so many Americans are unemployed but there are jobs available in places like agriculture then why don’t they take them? Yes, the work is often for just a few months, they aren’t the best in the pay, and require physical labor for many hours, but it is a job that you didn’t previously had. I currently work at a bar as a kitchen porter (dishwasher and guy who mops), and while it isn’t a great paying job, I keep it since am making enough to support myself. And if you refuse to take these kind of jobs even with higher than minimum wage pay, what gives you the right to blame some1 else for taking that job you didn’t want? This jobs problem is like if you go to a store and you don’t want to by a shirt that’s on sale, but once some1 else buys the last 1 you are mad at them now when you could have gotten it earlier.

And to add onto what Ana said, to all the people that claim that immigrants shouldn’t be allowed to have jobs in the U.S. since they take jobs from Americans, by law most businesses aren’t supposed to hire people who came here illegally and instead report them to authorities. Yet businesses do so anyway to save money, but legal immigrants and refugees who are here trying to become citizens need to work to earn citizenship so reporting them is not right. Also, despite what most people think, working immigrants do indeed pay taxes and provide funds for social security and Medicare/Medicaid, but illegal immigrants and refugees don’t receive these benefits unless they earn citizenship (which takes at least 5 years). If we got rid of every immigrant and refugee who is working right now we would loose millions of dollars going into programs that benefit the poor who are currently unemployed.

I did research on this subject. It’s not just field work, but also in the meatpacking industries: jobs that North Americans will not do. It’s so bad that when I did my research some Midwestern meatpacking plants were advertising in Spanish for workers in Mexico, even as the local unemployment rate was relatively high.

Not only is the pay not worth the arduous work, the injury rate is quite high and there is the danger of contamination from chemicals sprayed in the fields. Apparently locals know about this. Latin Americans, if they know, risk it.

Oh, there are some Norte Americanos who do attempt to work in the fields and et al industries, but they don’t last. They quit, that is, those who aren’t promoted to, say, a supervisory position. Immigrants, documented or not, are rarely promoted, as far as I could tell. Generally, the overall turnover rates in these industries are quite high.

These industries have their excuses for exploiting labor, but whether it’s a legitimate argument is debatable But, to really understand what going on in these industries, think profit.

Mike you’re acting like Farmers can just keep increasing wages to bring in legal workers. Increasing anymore and the Farmers would lose money. Farmers even added special benefits and increased hourly pay as much as possible but they can’t find any legal workers. Ask yourself this dummy, how can a farm afford to pay people top money just for picking produce? Unless you want peach or Apple at the store to quadruple in price, then Maybe farmers can increase the wage a bit more

    • Posted by Mike, at Reply

As said, I’m surprised all his help left unless he was hiring illegal aliens. They would have had nothing to fear had they been legal seasonal labor that is allowed to enter the country on a proper visa to do this work.
