New york city simply passed a program to earn university extra cost effective. Ana Kasparian, Brett Erlich, as well as Kim Horcher, the hosts of The Young Turks, inform you the benefits and drawbacks. Inform us just what you assume in the comment area below.

" The program to give free tuition for pupils at New York State's public colleges and universities passed on Friday by the Legislature has been hailed as an innovation as well as a model for various other states that will change the lives of students at public universities throughout the state.

The Excelsior Scholarship, as the program is called, is anticipated to cut the cost of a level from a four-year State University of New York university– now virtually $83,000 for tuition, costs and bed and board– by about $26,000 for a qualified family making $100,000 a year. That is a significant reduction, but still means paying about $57,000 over four years.

As well as it was consulted with honors from, to name a few, Hillary Clinton, who posted on Twitter: "Allow's celebrate New york city State obtaining something important done that we wanted to do across the country. An excellent action for progressives."

The program, which Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo made a legal concern, will mostly profit conventional pupils, those that go to university straight from secondary school and also earn their levels on time. The state's university student, increasingly, are not such as that. A number of them participate in part-time as well as take additional years to earn their degrees, so Excelsior will not help them."

In case degrees weren’t worthless enough….

Wew Lad I’ve gotten a ton of use out of mine, but I’ve gotten that use because of jobs outside of the U.S. It was my goal from the beginning to use it out of the country because I knew I’d get no use out of it where I was.

    • Posted by shygirl2927, at Reply

Jon Bones Jones i don’t think anyone denies there are only two sexes. they just make a difference between sex and gender. sex is the biological characteristics so like do you have a penis or a vagina whereas gender is more to do with the social implications of what is expected of you as someone of the male or female sex. these social expectations change depending on where you are in the world.

      atleast liberals are more educated.

    • Posted by Jon Bones Jones, at Reply

shygirl2927 nah, that’s a deflection trying to get around facts of life and pretend you can chose whatever gender you want to be. That’s not true. Liberals are anti science.

New York has very crappy worthless colleges. New York needs to make some work on making their colleges a little bit less crappy and actually worth something.

crimsonrose Not all STEM degrees are made equal. Natural sciences have poor prospects in general especially biology. The money’s in IT, Computer Science, Data Analytics and Engineering.

    • Posted by Cavecat, at Reply

crimsonrose This actually another important issue regarding higher education. The number of students the accept into the different programs should more closely resemble the number of job openings in that field. F.ex. there are are states that educate more than 10 times the number of teachers compared to the number of openings. That’s insane. One could fix that and the founding issue of universities with one fix. You could f.ex. have the universities earn 15 % of the income of their graduating students for 3 years after they get a job in a related field (what jobs would qualify would have to be specified in your contract with the university). Then the students would have no debt, and the universities would make no money off giving students education that doesn’t lead to jobs.

What TyT doesn’t get is just how many 2 year and 4 year colleges New York has, and they are pretty accessible, and currently many are filled to more than half with foreign students (I work on a SUNY campus), rather than New Yorkers. SUNY education is comparable to IVY league standards. Upstate New York has very cheap off campus living, not to mention New York state pays landlords to house these students. The statewide programs available to high school students that work with the states local industries to go from high school to college to a job. Overall I say TyT did a really poor job of looking at the big picture as to what New York currently offers as well as the new scholarship program.

In Canada (British Columbia), my 4 year degree cost me $24,000 TOTAL with a 4 year interest-free loan from the government ($6000 a year, $500 a month). Books and boarding extra of course. But still, if Canadians can afford a free healthcare system and government subsidized college/university with interest free student loans, I’m sure the US is capable too.

    • Posted by R Vanzo, at Reply

Even stems are not that hard anymore. I went for accounting and finance which was super easy and I have friends who graduated in engineering that had no trouble at all.

  9. Posted by Zeldagigafan, at Reply

The main issue is the requirement that you have to remain in the state for as long as you took advantage of the program AND the requirement of a full time load. This honestly feels like the classic Republican move of setting something up to fail to then demonize it and similar systems.

    • Posted by Salty Lemon, at Reply

free college is pointless when most students are unemployed or underemployed to where they can’t live on their own or pay their bills without help. If the jobs aren’t there for them to fill than free college is useless and a waste of taxpayer money. Its just a taxpayer funded vacation at that point.

    • Posted by dabart90, at Reply

more education is always better. better for your hole country. and its defntly not a waste of TAxpayers money.

So when Germany offers free tuition with the understanding that you will get a job in Germany to strengthen it, that is okay but New York state can’t ask the same?

The greed shown on the panel is kind of mind blowing.

    • Posted by whyamimrpink78, at Reply

Actually it shows how ignorant those on the ultra left is, or how they love to cherry pick things. They always point to other countries in how they are supposedly successful in implementing programs like this. But they fail to realize everything those countries do.
