The essence of the saying is on the choice of verb, that’s all; it relates to our lives in that people like Trump insist on the verb being one thing while in fact doing the other.

The original phrase was to “Eat your cake and still have it”. Which makes sense. Then stupid people changed it. Then stupid people try to figure out what it means.

“You can’t have your cake, and eat it too.” First of all, one can’t eat cake which one doesn’t have. So you have to ‘have’ cake, to even have a possibility of eating it. Secondly, having cake with no intention of eating it is… well…. crazy talk! And wasteful and in some ways disrespectful. Contrary to your postulation, the ‘eating’ of the cake is in fact complete DEPENDENT on the ‘having’. “you MUST have cake, to eat it at all”. I thing some confusion arises with the implication that the ENTIRE cake will be consumed in one sitting, which is short sighted at the least and gluttonous at the worst. As for me, if I have cake, I fully intend to eat cake. And later in the day, I may eat cake again… I may even have cake for breakfast the next day, although I prefer pie for breakfast, but if I have cake… eh why not eat cake? Cake doesn’t last forever. It gets stale if it not eaten. And that’s just a senseless waste. And lastly. .. Keep your hands off my cake!!!

I always believed the analogy to mean that you can not keep the beautifully crafted art that is cake, and also enjoy it’s indulgent flavor. Remember that cake used to be an art form as well as a dessert.
