seriously if any doctor deserves becoming a rich doctor its this guy

    • Posted by fulalbatross, at Reply

I would say the opposite; any doctor of relevant specialization not doing this is undeserving. This isn’t new.

    • Posted by TheCyberwoman, at Reply

fulalbatross It’s not knew, but it’s not common for a reason. A sad one, yes, but most doctors look at a situation like that and think what is the fastest and cheapest way to make sure this person will live. And amputation is often the answer to that question. There’s a lot of “unnecessary” amputation in hospitals everywhere, for time, ease and insurance reasons. Every extra step also adds an increased risk of infection, and most doctors will do just about anything to reduce that liability. That’s partially because they’re sued so often, so they’re discouraged from taking any extra risk. This guy could have gotten an infection in his abdomen, thigh, and now there’s still risks to the hand as it heals and continues to be operated on. Our current medical culture is not hospitable to taking those risks, no matter how beneficial to the patients continued well being they are.

    • Posted by fulalbatross, at Reply

Well yeah, that kind of liability does become a problem in a system where people sue doctors for trying to maximize their future life quality. Or for that matter have to chose between paying for keeping the hand, OR get the kids to college. And yes, it’s obviously cheaper and easier to amputate (in a short-sighted way, if one doesn’t care about future capability in a working environment for example), so I am well aware that’s chosen in many instances in some countries. Sad reasons indeed.

+TheCyberwoman2 Not every country follows America’s health care system. Brazil has universal healthcare. Not all countries are concerned with the fastest, cheapest, health care solution.

this procedure of keeping the hand alive by putting it in the body to save it from amputation and to keep it from getting infected, while waiting on a skin graph while bizarre strangely makes since. if it works out in the end for him great! but i dont think you can do the same thing for a foot though.

You’re literally talking about his stomach being ripped open because some cop thinks he’s being uncooperative and not even trying to understand what he’s telling him. Just the thought of how that goes down, and would likely go down is disturbing, seriously.

  18. Posted by Gangrel Aussie, at Reply

That is, honestly, pretty crazy. I kinda wonder what they’d need (in the way of materials / other advances) for some sort of box or glove that wasn’t a part of his body that they could seal the hand into as a way to likewise protect it and encourage cellular regrowth / regeneration of the muscles and tendons and all that. I guess I also need to check out the story in full because I really want to know if he was just in the hospital for the entire 42 or 45 days, or if he was sent home at any point. I’d *guess* he was kept in hospital, but imagine that bill in America!

    • Posted by sc0tte1, at Reply

I’m not a doctor by any means, but I’m curious as to why he’d need any additional enclosures for his hand considering it’s in his own body to begin with.?

    • Posted by Gangrel Aussie, at Reply

+sc0tte1 No, the point was to use the whatever instead of an improvised pocket in his abdomen.

    • Posted by sc0tte1, at Reply

Understood, thanks for clarifying. I suppose it was done due to lack of materials and funding in that area, considering that this was done in Brazil.

    • Posted by Gangrel Aussie, at Reply

+sc0tte1 NP, I’m feeling the lack of the english. Also, the question was more about whether it wouldn’t be necessary here in the US, and if that idea of an enclosure would have been something we currently can’t do, how far off are we in terms of medical advances from achieving it? Not a doctor myself and not really expecting an answer, it just seems like one of those questions this story raises.

    • Posted by fulalbatross, at Reply

Enclosing it in the body like this helps with keeping the tissue oxygenated and at proper temperature, and protects from infection all the while letting the body handle the bleeding of fluids resulting from lack of skin. Theoretically it might be possible to do it externally, but that would take hooking him up to a pretty advanced machine of some sort, not some glorified band-aid. So that would be much more expensive, for no medical gain what so ever. Such a machine would also be unlikely to be movable, while with this solution he’s almost certainly spent very close to 40 days at home, at least as far as this particular procedure is concerned.

The procedure isn’t exactly common, but it’s not unique in any way. I had a lecturer in reconstructive surgery once, with 40 years in the profession himself, and protecting, growing or simply storing bodyparts inside the patients own body was something they did several times a year.

Given similar circumstances this method is viable all over the world. It’s not a poor man’s version of medical care – it’s simply the best and most efficient solution (and coincidentally the cheapest as well).
