" Regardless of Mayor Expense de Blasio's duplicated assurances to finish arrests for low-level marijuana ownership, the NYPD is on track to arrest tens of countless pot-smoking New Yorkers this year, with enforcement once again extremely centered on minority areas.

New information from the Lawful Aid Culture, the city's primary public defender company, reveals simply a 3.9 percent decline in cannabis arrests because the beginning of 2016. Legal representatives for the Legal Help Culture claim that they've taken care of 5,934 cannabis instances involving misdemeanor charges and also violations since the start of this year, compared to 6,180 throughout the very same duration in 2016.

The Legal Help Society's numbers track carefully with total NYPD apprehension data, which showed 9,968 apprehensions for cannabis ownership, down simply 5 percent from the equivalent period last year.

" As New york city City's main public defender company with operations in all five districts, our numbers promote themselves," Legal Aid Culture speaker Redmond Haskins told Gothamist. "As long as City Hall enforces broken home windows policing, these apprehensions will unfortunately remain to happen and disproportionately effect neighborhoods of color."

Weed is a gateway.. Into the prison industrial complex

    • Posted by Hezekiah Ramirez, at Reply

That reminds me. I hate when people say there’s no such thing as a gateway drug. There is. And it is unquestionably alcohol. A lot of kids start drinking early, because we consider alcohol to be somehow different from any other intoxicating substance, and they turn out to be addicts so their disease is triggered before they have any idea what they’re doing. We need to educate young people about the consequences of alcohol use and abuse. You want to go after the gateway drug? Cool. It’s alcohol.

War on Drugs is a 30year EPIC failure, lines the pockets of prison CEOs, and creates instability in South America causing an influx of immigrants to the US. The War on Marijuana was specifically intended to put minorities and liberals in jail, as soon as that was admitted, it should have become unconsitutional

Bill Anderson: Google Harry Anslinger for a full account. Dupont is the company you’re thinking of. But Dupont wasn’t the only one. William Randolph Hearst had just invested in a major papermill to use for his newspaper publications. Hemp threatened other industries also, but those are the two major ones.

The way to put away the people you *FEAR* is to criminalize them by any means necessary. That means literally AND figuratively. America’s justice system has always CREATED its criminals as a pretext to put the “undesirables” away. *America creates all of it’s own monsters, at home and abroad.* Donald Trump being our greatest monstrosity.

    • Posted by Revolución Américain, at Reply

I am Gumby, dammit no all drugs should be legal because prohibition doesn’t work, look into alcohol prohibition and why we stopped and if you have any intelligence the problem should become apparent with drug prohibition, we can’t even keep drugs out of prison let alone the streets, it’s not about public safety it’s about money and power, legalization and regulation of all drugs would solve a huge amount of problems and free up money for proper drug education and rehabilitation programs.

    • Posted by Revolución Américain, at Reply

Parry well Cenk isn’t always right. I wouldn’t ban all guns but I would make it tougher to get one, I’d require a gun license, safety course, and psychiatric check to own a gun.

You must be blissfully ignorant. Problem is that minorities are much more likely to be targeted by “random” searches. The core problem is that prison owners would lose fortunes when marijuana would be legalized. Any other reason has been made up to cover up that simple fact.

That’s why I was shocked when they put that rapist cop in jail here in Oklahoma for what he did. (Daniel Holtzclaw). He raped several women and got sentenced to 263 years in prison.. Now his rich family and friends are doing everything they can to free him. They rented a huge billboard in Oklahoma City advertising the movie they had made that shows how he’s “Innocent.” Oh it pisses me off so much every time I come across a flier or card in my town from his friends and family trying to free that rapist. They just can’t believe he did it… But several women said that YES he did… Mark my words… He’ll walk free. I’ll be so mad but he’ll go free because they are rich and privileged. I mean who the hell else has money for billboards and movies to be made.. It makes me so sick..

Most of the people they catch committing crimes are blacks. More blacks live in poverty, and it’s usually blacks attacking wealthier communities. Just look at the string of gang related home invasions in Sacramento, or anywhere else. If you haven’t committed a crime and don’t resist arrest you have nothing to worry about

I know someone doing 3 months for an 1/8th. If you think the problem is fixed and we can relax because some states have legalized you are ignorant and mistaken. Face reality

    • Posted by Lasaret, at Reply

She said that nobody goes to prison for marijuana possession, and that would be true had she just put the word “basically” in front of nobody, since only 0.3% of the US prison population is there for just pot possession, and those 0.3% would be the ones who plead down from something more serious.

  10. Posted by Ribb Rotgut, at Reply

cops patrol black neighborhoods more, because there is more crime there. and black people are often smoking outside in groups in those neighborhoods. It’s not racism.

    • Posted by Marlo Ck, at Reply

LOL If the only way to get busted for pot is smoking outside, you don’t think that black people would be smart enough to smoke indoors? Arrest rates are higher because blacks are more likely to be stopped and searched.

    • Posted by robert postman, at Reply

Marlo Ck partly yes, but the in plain view arrests are higher for blacks than whites in NYC, so while there is a racial profiling component, there is also the fact that blacks are more likely to smoke weed in groups in public. You have to give a full accounting of the facts to really understand the numbers presented.

    • Posted by robert postman, at Reply

Marlo Ck I never claimed that it was the only cause, so don’t be dishonest. I live in NYC and I was stopped and frisked on multiple occasions when it was still in full force. I know that stop and frisk disproportionately affected black people. I wrote a response to a response to a post I made about it. My point was simply that you cannot determine the cause of something without controlling for other possible causal factors. I see this all the time and it is a bad habit that people have. So yes, black people are stopped and searched more than whites, but the number of in plain view arrests for marijuana is also much higher for blacks than for whites, and that is largely due to the frequency with which they smoke in groups in public areas.

  11. Posted by CROM, at Reply

Nicer neighborhoods are mostly white and have less crime so police patrol it less. More minorities (including blacks) live in lower income neighborhoods where there is more crime. Police mostly patrol areas with more crime. Cenk is making a “white and black” issue again when this is mostly about poverty. Not to mention, when you live in poverty you most likely can’t afford insurance, registration or to fix a broken taillight…so you get pulled over more often, they discover weed in your car, and you get arrested. Maybe you should pay your bills instead of smoking weed? Or work harder at getting out of poverty instead of smoking all day? Cenk is also saying that WallStreet has TONS of drugs. He has NO clue if that’s true. He’s just race bating.

KeepItReal funny because when I lived in the ghetto over here in Miami couple years back there was only one other white dude living in the complex that I lived in. And when you walk to your front door you would see at least 20 empty drug baggies. So stop lying.

    • Posted by CROM, at Reply

hueykhalidX… Per capita, blacks commit more violent crimes and homicides. Per capita means per person. Which is astonishing since there are 159 million more white Americans than black.

  12. Posted by Thomas Buchovecky, at Reply

The war on drugs is racist, not the cops. I don’t think minorities are “targeted” but they are more likely to deal and dealers can often plead down to possession. People who find themselves born in impoverished areas often feel forced to achieve success through illegal means. Legalization is the only answer.

    • Posted by Aji Ambe, at Reply

minorities are definitely targetted. TYT has been saying this for years now, and they’ve had ex-cops corroborate this. Police and the rest of the Justice System will purposely go into poorer (often minority) neighborhoods because they know that people there don’t often have the funds to bail out or even defend themselves.

    • Posted by OodlesOfSpoodles, at Reply

Aji Ambe nope. Cops are called into minority areas. They make arrests and find drugs on vandals, assaulters, speeders, etc. The idea thatcthey go into neighboorhoods looking for black people to arrest is a conspiracy theory peddled by a guy trying to get a paycheck for not working

  13. Posted by Dookje, at Reply

Okay people: the war on marijuana is 3 things:
    – big pharma: it is a medicine, and bp doesn’t like that, they want you to take a pill not a plant you can grow yourself
    – modern day slavery: lock up black people and have them work for nearly free in prison
    – stupid. Come live in Holland. No one dies from it or is addicted.
