Operation Democratic Backbone

Sign the petition to get strong progressives into the Democratic party.

Introducing Operation Backbone, a petition to let Democrats in congress know we want them to stand up to corporate interests. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"Leading Democrats on Capitol Hill don’t think their party is in a state of crisis. In an interview with Politico published Thursday, outgoing Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid brushed off questions about whether the Republican Party had reduced the Democratic Party to a smoking pile of rubble in the 2016 elections.

“They have Trump, I understand that. But I don’t think the Democratic Party is in that big of trouble,” Reid said. “I mean, if (FBI Director James) Comey kept his mouth shut, we would have picked up a couple more Senate seats and we probably would have elected Hillary.”

Reid’s comments mirror those of some other powerful Democrats. Earlier this month, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi also downplayed the extent to which Democrats would have to change in an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd.

“I don’t think people want a new direction,” Pelosi said of her party. Asked after the election why Democrats hadn’t retaken the House, Pelosi also pointed to Comey’s letter and said, "He became the leading Republican political operative in the country — wittingly or unwittingly.””*

Lol this is the dumbest idea of the left. The country just rejected
progressive policies big time, and now they want to double down on their
insanity. I say go for it. It’ll ensure no democrat ever wins the
    presidency again.

HucklePeel no one will ever come close to Reagan in ’84. 525 electorates

+wesley roche I believe LBJ defeated Barry Goldwater by a larger margin in

+whyamimrpink78 The biggest reason Trump won GOP primaries is because they
ran like 30 dismal establishment candidates who all split the
pro-establishment vote against Trump, until he had the momentum to win.
WikiLeaks shows the DNC was arranging the primary for Hillary – a
nationwide household name – since 2014.

No dummy the country rejected a party that has done nothing for them in 30
years and Bernie would’ve beat you clowns handily.

Wow dummy guess you missed the sabotage the dems did on him.

I’m all for Cenk’s objective of pushing a progressive voice in the DNC and
getting rid of corporate money, but on the other hand, Corporate Democrats
along with Corporate Republicans are leading to a collapse of the American
Empire and a full scale revolution, I kind of want to see that more than I
    want to save the DNC.

It’s funny how people in the comment section think creating a 3rd party for
progressives will make them win lol. It would only take votes away from the
democrats leading the republicans to win.

Why don’t we start a new party for progressives?

    • Posted by Cath' J J, at Reply

Do both: two pronged approach. Try to retake the Dems from the inside, and
create new or strengthen greens from the outside as a credible threat to
Dems and Reps. See what works best, and collorate where possible.

    • Posted by MISTY1770, at Reply

Democrats have been progressives since at least Woodrow Wilson. It’s the

MISTY1770 The Democrats have only been largely progressive since the 60s.
There was a weird, 2 nation split prior to that, with Northern democrats
being fairly liberal, while Southern democrats were extremely conservative.
To be honest, Republicans had a similar split up until the 80s.

You don’t know your history. Our present society is based on 100 year old
      Progressive ideology.
Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, 1901–09, William Howard Taft, 1909–13, and
Woodrow Wilson, 1913–21 were the main Progressive presidents and their
administrations saw intense social and political change in American
society. Wilson created the Fed and US has been at war ever since.
Progressivism is collapsing in the west like communism collapsed in 1990
soviet union. Progressives are the establishment.

The Dem Party is dead! Finally watching their denials, deflecting blame,
proves what I have been saying for a long time, that is liberalism is not a
political ideology but rather a serious mental disorder. What else can
explain liberals with their Sanctuary Cities determined to protect illegal
criminal aliens who do serious crimes against Americans.

    • Posted by ChubbyGuy1, at Reply

Yeah sure, this has only been said how many times throughout history? What
do you think happened after Regan won 49 out of 50 states? The DNC is still
      here lol.

democratic backbone is going to be a 70 y.o. self proclaimed socialist who
    rolled over for Hillary.
I don’t like that, I want there to be competition in politics. This way
we’ll be a one party state in 2020 like we’re China.

democrats lose on purpose to discredit left wing politics, they much prefer
trump over bernie, and they dont care if any republican wins because they
were hired by the corporations to destroy grass roots activism and act as
    “gatekeepers” for the left

Cenk, your not an idealist, you’re a realist.

To me an idealist is someone who thinks “Dems will finally grow a backbone
    under Trump.”

A cynic is someone who says “the Dems will never grow a backbone”.

A realist says “we will MAKE them grow a backbone!”
