" BUFFALO, N.Y.– After 3 offenders fatally overdosed in a solitary week in 2015, it became clear that Buffalo's ordinary medicine treatment court was no suit for the heroin and also painkiller dilemma.

Currently the city is explore the nation's very first opioid dilemma intervention court, which can obtain users right into therapy within hours of their apprehension as opposed to days, needs them to check in with a judge each day for a month instead of as soon as a week, as well as places them on strict curfews. Carrying out justice takes a back seat to the overarching objective of just keeping defendants alive.

" The suggestion behind it," stated court job director Jeffrey Smith, "is just around the number of individuals are still taking a breath every day when we're completed."

Moneyed with a three-year $300,000 U.S. Justice Department give, the program began May 1 with the intent of treating 200 people in a year and providing a version that heroin-wracked cities can replicate.

2 months in, coordinators are optimistic. As of late recently, none of the 80 people that consented to the program had actually overdosed, though around 10 warrants had actually been released for missed out on appearances.

Buffalo-area health officials condemned 300 fatalities on opioid overdoses in 2016, up from 127 two years previously. That consists of a young pair that did not make it to their second drug court appearance last springtime. The woman's daddy got here rather to tell the judge his child and also her boyfriend had actually died the evening prior to."

Legalize all drugs treat it as a Health issue like Portugal now hardly anyone overdoes in Portugal.

    • Posted by Jared Greathouse, at Reply

Christopher Bojorquez Technically Portugal decriminalized drugs. This is different than my solution incidentally, which is to legalize and regulate the drugs, every one of them.

Why is Tariq a “Jackass” for telling “the obvious truth” as you say?

it’s only an epidemic because the main people affected are white people. if it were a minority problem then they would just continue to lock people up. just like they always have. that’s America for u.

+Shia LaBeouf plot twist… we don’t care who wins the election… our government is corrupt… asking black people to vote is like saying” hey, would you prefer to burn to death or freeze to death… thats why this election we just microwaved our organic trader joes popcorn pulled up a recliner and waited to watch the government implode and white people lose their ish…. life comes at you fast!

*”Opioid Court” and “Saving lives”???* What the heck? We have never heard of a Crack Court. Hmmm. These same judges didn’t have a problem “criminalizing, imprisoning and demonizing” crack users. The wickedness and hypocrisy is incredible!

      Bobby Mugabe Exactly

    • Posted by Carlos Bailey, at Reply

Bobby Mugabe Aside from the fact that he’s attempted to profit from creating controversy himself, he goes out of his way to call anyone who disagrees with him on any topic a white supremacist, rascist, or coon and makes himself out to be a victim everytime. That makes him a jackass.

    • Posted by Bobby Mugabe, at Reply

Carlos Bailey – But everything you’re saying is just a lie. Also if that “glove” don’t fit you, then why are you offended at all?
Now whether you like the messenger or not is IRRELEVANT! The message itself is factual and spot on. Deal with THAT.

either free all people who are locked up for non violent drug crimes and spend the newly freed up funds on drug treatment programs or lock those junkies up, raid their communities, take their kids and turn their bodies into walking cash machines for the 1% like you did the minorities whose drug problem was created by the amerikkkan government… cry me a river you super predators.

    • Posted by Greg Matic, at Reply

you tell it like it is.

    • Posted by Bobby Mugabe, at Reply

Very real statement. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. Yet when Tariq Nasheed or Professor Black Truth point this out, they are labeled racists and jackasses. smfh

    • Posted by jaren williams, at Reply

+bertha yellowfinch you are right there is more money in actually selling the drugs and treating the symptoms of addiction than actually curing it. since we live in a capitalist country the government we have now will never try to eradicate drugs. they want to continue to enslave our community. in theory I believe legalizing marijuana opening up free rehabs that are available to all citizens free of charge with non-disclosure agreements . releasing and creating jobs specifically for the people that will be released from jail that have non-violent drug charges. we should also have drug education classes just like we had sex education classes that will teach people how to use legal and illegal drugs safely and also teach people what to do when someone overdoses.

    • Posted by jaren williams, at Reply

+Bobby Mugabe (in call of duty voice) this is not a test black people… the chickens have come to roost… disassociate yourself from the target and take cover!

white people are evil.To hell with everyone else sympathy for themselves. All these white people are using drugs why aren’t white drug dealers going to jail?

    • Posted by Den Hayes, at Reply

Because the big dealers are black at least in the dc, philly, baltimore area

    • Posted by Jess J, at Reply

Den Hayes You are getting that from data of black people getting criminalize for distributing yet not realizing how racialize the criminal justice system is. One example is the recent legalization of weed. VICE covered a story of this company that was able to make millions on weed and they admitted they sold weed before it became legal. But they were never caught and were able to get the license to sell it because of their clean record. So it may seem like black people are the gateway to all these drugs but the truth is that they get caught more. Also the opioid crisis is caused by bad doctors and pharmaceutical companies. These people are most likely white. It’s time for white people to take accountability on this one and stop crying victim like y’all love to tell us, black people, to do.

  17. Posted by Max B, at Reply

damn….a opioid court for white people??? this is some bullshit!!! blacks got the book thrown at them. let these fuckers die. less white people the better.
