Find out more below:

" Maryland high school trainee Maddi Runkles, 18, is a senior with a 4.0 GPA. She's also anticipating a baby child in September. Runkles' story is going viral due to the fact that her small Christian senior high school will not allow the pregnant trainee walk at college graduation. The official factor, inning accordance with the institution's management, is simple: "Immorality." Bustle reached out to Heritage Academy for comment; the institution referred us back to previous statements made by manager David Hobbs. His official statement could be located right here.

Runkles has participated in Heritage Academy, a Christian school with 175 students situated in Hagerstown, Maryland, considering that 2009. According to The New york city Times, the institution has a nine-point "declaration of belief" disallowing "intimate sexual activity … engaged in outside of the marriage dedication in between a guy as well as a lady."

Runkles shows up to have been a model student: Along with her great grades, she was president of the trainee council, and also was involved in other school organizations and sporting activities groups. That changed when she informed the institution that she was expectant in February. The baby's daddy is not a senior high school trainee, as well as Runkles does not have plans to marry him." *.

So there’s a father out there as well. Notice how no one brings up HIS morality…

    • Posted by SK Y, at Reply

+Nat Legend But that’s the point. Questioning his morality would be redundant. It would lead to nothing. There’s nothing anyone would be able to do about it because for all we know he’s subject to no one. So who would even mention him? Certainly not the school. Do you want the school to go after him as well? I don’t see a double standard here. Just a school minding their own business berating their own students only. Everything else would be outside their business. So why bother?

    • Posted by EMAN67 (Movies,politics,commentary), at Reply

+SK Y you said it better than me,its a moot point with him,the whole video is about her breaking the rules of the school an her and the punishment that followed, since he doesn’t go to the school it doesnt apply to him,now if he did go to the school and was allowed to go to his commencement, then yes that hypocrisy.

    • Posted by Nat Legend, at Reply

“Questioning his morality would be redundant.”

So it’s okay to get stuck into the mother because she’s the easy target. As per usual.

+Nat Legend Uh….did you even read the rest of what I said after that? Is that what you do? Pick out a phrase that you can oppose and ignore the rest of the whole statement? I literally told you why talking about the father would yield no results but you seemed to be persistent to focus on a non-existing “double standard” here. Forcing your idea upon this issue won’t make you look more right.

    Christian Sharia law

    • Posted by Lion Cub, at Reply

Nope, it would be sharia , if they stone her

    • Posted by Arie Fraiser, at Reply

+Lion Cub lol. You believe the only punishment in Sharia law is some type of stoning/physical punishment? Oh poor sheltered American.

    • Posted by Lion Cub, at Reply

Not american , sharia is religious law , so it deals with a variety of criminal and civil cases . the punishment for this girl under sharia would be a 100 lashes since she is not married

    • Posted by Arie Fraiser, at Reply

+Lion Cub lol! I thought you said the punishment would be stoning earlier. Well it’s a relief that this time you think it’s merely lashing.

Sharia law is merely enforcement of laws based on religous teachings and there are 100s of different forms of sharia law and ways of enforcing this and many forms of punishment. The mere fact that this young lady is being punished based on religous teachings makes this as I stated Christian sharia law.

    • Posted by Lion Cub, at Reply

If she is married , it would be stoning , but i guess she is not married , there are scholars who want to apply the punishment of stoning to unmarried men and women too , but they are not in the mainstream of Islam, No , there are no different forms of sharia , the punishment for zina (fornication) and adultery is the same in all the branches of sunni Islam , and shia islam , there are no different intepertations , the text is clear and muslim scholars unanimously agree on the matter
There is no christian sharia , that’s the antithesis of the doctrine of sacrifice , redemption and salvation , the whole point of the new testament is to do away with the old jewish laws and the Sanhedrin , that christian morality cannot be enforced by law .
That is not to say that christians will have to deal with you , in fact a private christian instituation has or should have the right to expel you , or discriminate against you , for not following their moral guidelines , again because they are private , they don’t have to deal with you , and you don’t have to deal with them , it is a voluntary consensual non coercive relationship , cannot be enforced by law and can be terminated at any time , that is the opposite of what ”Sharia” is , so your analogy here , it doesn’t work , unless you meant it as a joke , and if that’s the case i apologize

There’s a difference between being realistic about teenage sex and outright encouraging it. The school is absolutely in the wrong, but these hosts are a bit daffy. She thinks it’s unrealistic that somebody as young as 21 might still be a virgin? What?

I’m sorry, but this seesaw is not evened out. For all the pushback against institutions for shaming teenage sex, I see no pushback against society trending towards the shaming of young adult virgins. As a 23 year old male virgin, I guarantee I feel just as if not more ostracized than the poor woman in this story. I’m not manly enough. I’m a freak. I’m a loser. People on the internet tell me I’m going to die alone. Women cut dates short when they find out I’m inexperienced. I am a pariah and nobody talks about this. I am certainly not the only 23 year old virgin in the world. The public shaming of conservative sexuality should not be encouraged with rhetoric that implies everyone has already had sex before 21.

And none of my friends who lost their virginity in high school have particularly great stories about how it happened. A lot of them wave it off as a mistake they made due to peer pressure. The ones that don’t tend to be in toxic on-again-off-again relationships with the people the went with in high school. I’m not sure if this encouraging “kids will be kids” attitude is necessarily the right stance to take, even if it is a better alternative to punishing promiscuous students. It strikes me as lazy hands-off parenting more than anything else.

+Happy New Year’s! I cannot speak to the psychological affects it has had on you but to say that having laws in place for the sole purpose of punishing someone for having sex is the same as individuals disregarding you for not having sex is incorrect. You are speaking of personal interactions I’m talking about institutional laws there is a difference between the two. Also to say that most women who get pregnant do not face personal discrimination in their professional life is wrong as well. The fact of the matter is no one should be punished for sex in any fashion whether for having sex or for not having sex. but women who become pregnant are unique in that it is easier to target if they choose to keep the baby they will not be able to hide this from their family and peers. Many women do get disowned and ridiculed for becoming pregnant and single mothers have one of the hardest job prospects in America.

    • Posted by Happy New Year's!, at Reply

+rose novel Other than age of consent laws, what laws are in place punishing individuals for having consensual sex? I’m afraid I may be ignorant to that matter. “The fact of the matter is no one should be punished for sex in any fashion whether for having sex or for not having sex.” But hooray for common ground!

    • Posted by Miyuki2319, at Reply

      +Happy New Year’s!
The issue is on both sides. For females, having sex is shameful. For males, not having sex is shameful. There are some very unfortunate implications to holding these two beliefs at the same time. While this particular video and many others on this site focuses on the female side of this issue, they have done some that show the toxicity of the male side as well.

On a side note, I’m slightly confused by your framework. Is your definition of “conservative sexuality” waiting until you are 21 to have one night stands?

  9. Posted by Miyuki2319, at Reply

So what are they doing to the dad? If she’s being punished “not because she is pregnant but because she was immoral”, then the father is equally at fault. Or is it only immoral when a woman has sex?

Even as an MRA, who predominantly focuses on issues effecting men. I can see that this is bullshit. She shouldn’t be punished for her acts. I find it amazing a “Christian” school is punishing her for this. She didn’t get an abortion, she stayed in school, got a 4.0 GPA, and is doing something with her life so she will prepare a better life for her child. Heck, they should be proud of her and support her for that!!!

I remembered graduating while three students were pregnant back in 05. To this day, they’re doing well in life, have careers, and have a family. The school (far as I have witnessed), never cast judgement on them at all. They made sure all is there for them to have while they continued going to school.

    • Posted by Cosmic Ghxst, at Reply

Mika20 The gurl pledged to rules. the school has rules against premarital sex. she was Suspended for two days and won’t walk the stage. Even If she got an abortion it wouldn’t change a thing because she just committed another evil sin. the school enforced its rules and punished her. get over it.

    • Posted by Mika20, at Reply

We all have sin, yet God forgives when we repent and do what is right. Yes, she committed a sin, but continued on to do all she can that’s right for herself and her baby. If Jesus can forgive, why can’t the school? Then again, that’s life.

    • Posted by Cosmic Ghxst, at Reply

Mika20 So, you’re saying the school shouldn’t enforce rules? Well then if they should I guess all the kids she have wild sex, drink and smoke all they want, break the rules it’s all ok in a CHRISTIAN school held with BIBLICAL beliefs!

    • Posted by Mika20, at Reply

How bout instead have better education in sex, drugs, and such so kids and teens will know better than to do anything of that. And regardless of what schools teach, parents should take part in teaching their children right from wrong. Even for a Christian school, you’d think they have classes for that, but you can’t expect everyone to be 100% perfect. Nonetheless, schools have a right to apply the rules they see fit, yet they should have common sense in knowing how their actions will reflect their image as a whole. For this one, this school will just be known as a hypocrisy.

  12. Posted by Janet, at Reply

You guys are straight up lying. She’s not punished for choosing life. She’s punished for breaking a pledge she signed. She’s punished for having sex outside marriage. While I don’t agree with them punishing her more harshly than they punish other students who break the pledge and I think the way the school has treated her is awful, don’t you think as reporters you owe your viewers the truth? Or is the truth all relative now? She’s punished for having premarital sex, not for choosing life. smh.

    • Posted by Taintus Maximus, at Reply

Janet she’s being punished because she’ll be pregnant at the ceremony. so the point is, had she chosen to abort the school would’ve never known and she’d be allowed to participate. but since she did the “christian” thing and kept it, now the school knows and is punishing her.

Seriously tho, this woman is embodying pro-life ideals and the school has decided to shame her? You can’t have your cake and eat it too, if you expect women to be pro-life then you need to treat them with respect as such.

    • Posted by Artaneius, at Reply

There mad because she had sex when its against the rules not because of the child.

  15. Posted by Aaron Wantuck, at Reply

I am sorry but here is the problem. The student is in a PRIVATE christian school. So that means public opinion on the matter does not matter. When parents send their children and pay tuition to this school they also agree to abide by the school rules.

If this was a PUBLIC school they could not have done that.

    This is a non issue.

    • Posted by Aaron Wantuck, at Reply

      +JD York

You can not look at this with emotion if want something to change. After all you can not legislate morality. So the reason why people send their children to private school is for one of a few reasons. The most common being they want a “better” education for their children becasue in some cases and/or the public school option is crappier, and they want their kids being around people of the same set of “values”.

In the case of religious schools it is the values part. Furthermore since tax money is not being contributed to the school, the general public has no say in how they run their school as long as they fulfill the min state requirements.

Weather you and I feel it is wrong is NOT the question as by you telling them they can not do that is violating their 1st amendment rights. UNLESS it was public school, then your voice matters and religious and personal beliefs must stay out of the school.

    • Posted by Aaron Wantuck, at Reply

      JD York

I have to apologize then. I do agree it is completely hypocritical of them but my own person opinion is that religion is nothing but hypocritical.

I find it funny that a group is pro-life, but they LOVE their military, bomb abortion clinics killing people, and so on. I find it funny they are abstinence only education when in fact it leads to more teen pregnancy then if you just taught them how to have safe sex….

So yes we are on the same page completely.

    • Posted by The Timekeeper, at Reply

What’s your point? Does it being a private Christian school somehow preclude public discourse on how even religions don’t abide by their own tenets, so they have no call to expect people who don’t follow that religion to do so?

The message to other girls that get pregnant at that school is —- Get an abortion if you don’t want your life ruined because there’s no room for compassion nor forgiveness here! Not to mention the 10 commandments go out the window!

    • Posted by The Timekeeper, at Reply

This exactly. It’s incredibly stupid to even _risk_ getting pregnant before graduation, let alone mess up enough to end up that way, but it’s even more stupid to preach love and compassion and then throw stones at the girl (it’s not just a Ten Commandments thing, but also a Golden Rule “let he who is without sin” thing). The school has set up a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” policy, where a girl who makes the same mistake—because it will absolutely happen again one day—would either have to endure the same pointless shaming or go against the religion’s teachings and get an abortion. That’s how you drive adherents away.
