NYU researchers found that almost 40% of US inmates are imprisoned unnecessarily. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“Nearly 40 percent of inmates in U.S. prisons could be released as they don’t pose any compelling threat to public safety, a study found. According to the report, setting the 576,000 inmates (39 percent) free could save $20 billion annually.

The study published Friday was conducted by the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law. The U.S., which is home to less than five percent of the world’s population, is responsible for the incarceration of nearly 25 percent of the world’s inmates.

“Mass incarceration has huge social, racial, and economic costs,” Inimai Chettiar, director of the Brennan Center’s Justice Program, said in a statement. “As a result, there is intriguing, bipartisan consensus that we need to fix our broken criminal justice system. This is the first detailed, granular look at precisely how we can achieve this by significantly and safely cutting the prison population.”

Researchers analyzed federal and state criminal codes in addition to convictions and sentences of roughly 1.5 million inmates who are serving sentences for 370 different crime categories, to arrive at the number of inmates imprisoned without a meaningful public safety threat.

They found that 25 percent of inmates nationwide are nearly all non-violent lower-level offenders and could be sentenced to community service or probation rather than prison. Fourteen percent of inmates have served sufficient sentences that could warrant their release “with little to no risk to public safety.””*

    • Posted by DraconicEpic, at Reply

If the government really wanted slaves, they still wouldn’t use prisons.
Prisoners are money sinks and it would be cheaper to just employ minimum
wage workers. Workers don’t need to be fed or housed; they take care of
that themselves. Nor do they need to be guarded 24/7 by people with guns.

MajGibbons24 Yep it’s crazy. The war on drugs with the Reagan
administration started its deplorable climb to the top. As long as the
people on top are not affected by any policies it will continue but this
thing called the Internet gives me hope to a transparent future.

That depends if the police officers don’t shoot the people going to prison
    first.

    • Posted by -insert name here-, at Reply

+David Sanchez This is the US police, everything is a threat to them…

    • Posted by David Sanchez, at Reply

You mean like on July 7th in Dallas?

    • Posted by -insert name here-, at Reply

+David Sanchez Inbetween 2010 and 2014 546 US police officers where killed
in the line of duty. 2050 citizens were killed, 1/3 of them were carrying a
weapon. It’s and officers job to put their life on the line to serve their
country, so why are more civilians dying to police officers than the
      officers themselves?

    • Posted by David Sanchez, at Reply

Wow, considering the United States has about 765,000 sworn officers and 321
million people, it definitely seems like officers are more likely to get
      killed than citizens.

    • Posted by -insert name here-, at Reply

321 million divided by 4.95 roughly makes up the total population of the UK
which is 64 million people. the police force in the UK numbers to around
120,000 personnel and if you divide 765,000 by 4.95 then it gives you
154,545 so the amount of police in the UK are more outnumbered compared to
the police in the US, and yet how many police related deaths do you see in
      Britain?

Or you could make it illegal for prisons to use slave labour & all those

    • Posted by RT Myths Debunked, at Reply

+Rob Smith Since when do Americans care about that? They shop at Walmart.

  10. Posted by Colonel 100, at Reply

2 reasons, republicans love locking up unfavorable people they dont want in
    society
and it makes profit for private prisons

  11. Posted by Ahmru Ghanim, at Reply

Ding Ding Ding, TYT finally figured that out. Its all in the 13th amendment
which didn’t end slavery but rather disguise it. Thats why 60% of the
incarcerated population is black even though 12% of the U.S population is
black. The 13th amendment states that slavery can be used as a form of
punishment against those who commited a crime. In the past hundred years or
so corporation’s have lobbied for a different definition of crime.
Basically they pay the goverment millions or even billions to arrest more
people unnecessarily (Usually targeting minorities). As a result the
corporation’s make a LARGE profit while those unfortunate people who got
fucked over have to work as a slave as stated by the 13th amendment. Whats
even worse is the goverment also tricks people into getting jailed even
though they did nothing with things like the Plea Deal. The plea deal
basically is if you confess to it before you take to court you’ll get a
shorter sentence which is like shooting yourself in the foot. Never admit
    to something you never did.
