So we just gonna act like borat didn’t be little and make a mockery of the inhabitants of khazakstan in order to make the movie? Liberals only respect people’s wishes unless if it offers them entertainment or goes along with their own agendas

    • Posted by Victor Cates, at Reply

CyberSpine Laughing at yourself is your choice (and can be easy from a position of privilege or power). But people often talk about “punching up”, while regarding “punching down” as tasteless. It’s possible to argue about how mocking he’s being, but SBC is a wealthy Cambridge educated British Entertainer putting the burden of understanding the joke on comparatively disadvantaged groups. So while no one feels sorry about americans who SBC punked, people might react less well to the ambiguous mockery of Kazkhstan. And there have been a spate of people denouncing the plausible deniability of ironic racism, or ironic sexism. And even when irony is genuinely intended, you can be sure that >30% of the audience will miss any additional level. That was the concern of the ADL – accidental reinforcement of bigotry. (Similar criticisms were levelled at the Ali G character and backfilling the biography via the film to be less racially problematic.)

    • Posted by Cyberspine, at Reply

I don’t think SBC is more powerful than the nation of Kazakhstan.

    • Posted by Calleihal nwn2, at Reply

They certainly didn’t wait for the full investigation to fire him though. That ain’t sticking to your convictions. Unless Cenk’s convictions are related to image rather than substance, to click bait revenues rather than principles of law like “we are all iinnocent until proven guilty”.

  9. Posted by Attila The Khunt, at Reply

Hasiktir lan, I like you Cenk but I completely disagree with you. Sure, it’s fun and games and it might be funny and beneficial for kazakhstan, but the regular people that live there probably dont want to see dozens of half naked tourists casually walking on the street. There’s women and children outside, public decency is still a thing.

And the oil wrestling thing is understandable too. It’s a traditional and deep cultural competetive sport, not some sort of homosexual show for gays to get a hardon watching it. How would it be if thousands of homosexual men went to the olympics just to get hard, it would cause an outrage if they went to see a competetive sport and tradition just for sexual purposes.

I’m all for being free and acceptance but there absolutely are limits. Like I said, respect and decency is important.

    • Posted by Victor Cates, at Reply

TYT would be bothered by straight men going to a sport for the express intent of seeing highly trained elite athlete as pieces of meat.

    • Posted by Trajan, at Reply

Attila The Khunt When are we going to bin the “women and children” tag, as if women are these delicate little flowers. Children I understand, but why would a woman be more affected by stupid stunts like this than a man?

    • Posted by Attila The Khunt, at Reply

Trajan yeah I understand your point man, but I guess it’s more of a cultural difference. I agree it’s mainly kids having to see it that I’m concerned about, but women have a different value in countries like Turkey and Kazakhstan, that’s why I included that.

I always thought Cohen should have used a made-up country name for Borat’s home nation.

    • Posted by BurnEdOutOne, at Reply

Then any rudimentary investigation would have destroyed his ability to get interviews with pretty much anyone. He needed to name a place that people can determine ‘is’, and little else about it.

Nobody is taking someone who claims to be representing a country that doesn’t appear on google seriously. “Cancel this ‘Freedonia’ interview. Google says it isn’t a real place.”
But if a ‘Kazakh’ reporter wants to do an interview, staff member says “Yeah, I never heard of it either. Somewhere in the former USSR it turns out.”

If he went with making up a name, the few people he did land interviews with would have their guard up and he wouldn’t be able to get much comedic material from them. They would constantly be saying things like “Where did you say you were from again? Huh. Never heard of it.”, and this increased suspicion would have made people catch on more quickly. It frankly would not have worked.

He pretty much had to refer to somewhere extant for the masquerade to work in the first place.

    • Posted by Dan Hawkins, at Reply

No – it was way funnier picking a random country that up until that point most people living west of Poland (other than some hockey fans) had never even heard of. More offensive to the Kazaks, but funnier for everyone else.

    • Posted by Audrey Muzingo, at Reply

BurnEdOutOne: You have a point there, although I doubt any rudimentary investigation would have been carried out by the majority of people he interacted with in the movie, ha. A lot of them would probably identify Africa as a country.

    • Posted by Decent man, at Reply

Kazakhstan should change it’s name to Boratstan.

    • Posted by BurnEdOutOne, at Reply

People on the street? Probably not.
Anyone doing the interview with a professional context who has one staff member or assistant, they’d figure it out between the time he booked the interview and the time “Borat” showed up with his camera man.

  13. Posted by Ruben Garza, at Reply

I’m part Kazakh I’m not really offended by that lmao borat is just a movie😂

    • Posted by That guy from London, at Reply

Ruben Garza but surely I can imagine some Kazakh getting overly pissed off when they get random foreigners doing the whole “gimmicking” of Borat to them every given seconded…

    • Posted by Ruben Garza, at Reply

That guy from London True I agree to that

  14. Posted by Quick Fix, at Reply

I totally agree they are way too sensitive, but another thing is that Kazakhstan and its people are nothing like what they were portrayed as in Borat, so that is another reason they are so offended by it. When in Kazakhstan, don’t even mention Borat, this is what I learnt the hard way. Just their looks will kill you :))

    Cenk is completely wrong.
People outside of Kazakhstan know nothing about Kazakhstan, but what they have seen of “Kazakhstan” in Borat.
His entire job was shitting and making fun of a country, in essence using popular culture as a means to provide the only information about a country they wouldn’t have otherwise gotten.
This is nothing like Erdogan and moustache, it’s incredibly offensive and racist and insensitive.
This tourism increase that Ana is talking about is for all the wrong reasons, I doubt that the locals or anyone over there would be happy about seeing tourists going there for the reasons that they are going.
And you laughing about it like it’s nothing, I see that many times your racism is very selective.
