The mayor of New Orleans just provided an awesome speech on what the Confederacy REALLY was. Ana Kasparian, Brett Erlich, and also Kim Horcher, the hosts of The Young Turks, simplify. Tell us just what you assume in the remark area listed below.

" Recently, the City of New Orleans got rid of a 16-foot statue of General Robert E. Lee from the center of Lee Circle. This was the last of four Confederate monoliths that were taken down in the city after the city council had actually declared them to be a public nuisance. The elimination of the sculptures as well as monoliths brought about dissentious political discussion as well as warmed exchanges at the sites, as well as some apprehensions.

In an address that has actually since gone viral, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu highlighted that these monuments just weren't innocent ceremonies of a bygone age. Rather, these were set up as part of a movement known as The Cult of the Lost Cause as a means to rewrite background and also make it that the Confederacy wasn't on the incorrect side."

Exactly…But progressives focus on the slavery aspect of it as if it were the main thing, it simply wasn’t and this is widely agreed upon by largely liberal professors across the US

    • Posted by luvcheney1, at Reply

Adam Smith noted that with slaves that are high value assets to owners the owners had to keep them up with  adequate shelter, food, care because if not the value of their asset might approach zero. With employees, this not a concern as much. Slavery was NOT free labor. Stupid.

    • Posted by robbie g, at Reply

no slavery literally was the cause of the break . specifically the expansion into the west of the institution as the country expanded . if you say the war was largely economic you are correct. the souths economy was dependent on slave labor. states rights. no state has a right to suppress the personal freedoms guaranteed by the constitution. at least 10 states that seceded named slavery in their articles of secession. it was the cause.

Neo-confederates and racists say that this is erasing history. I say that you put the statues where they belong, in a museum. They aren’t being erased, but they’re being put in a place that will make them be solely focused on for their historical value.

extremists find it hard to see through there own Swiss cheese reasoning  they can justify the monument to a “terrorist” while inflicting a crusade apon the “unworthy”

    • Posted by Cythil, at Reply

One can also Juxtapose the statues giving more context to the statues.

Rather then using the statues as a way to celebrate the confederacy (Which I do not get why one would do as there main reason to existence was there different on property, AKA They freaking wanted people to be property!) One can with cleaver juxtaposition direct the attention to the faults of the confederacy.

Isaac Azminov – no one is giving excuse to the deaths of innocence at Manchester. To understand our current conflict is to keep in mind that we are killing far more innocent civilians there than they are here. Trumps first mission killed 30 to include an 8 year old American little girl. We’ve killed far far more innocent civilians than they have. This doesn’t excuse their actions, but surely you can see we are just as disgusting. Let’s not forget the story Chelsea Manning was jailed for. We too are to blame for the chaos.

Why are you confusing morality with how wars are won? As I stated before the south got incredibly close to taking the capital. This has nothing to do with the treatment of slaves (other than the aftermath and the propaganda spewed afterward would be highly different. The “luck” comment was simply critique of +John Edgar’s analysis of why the north won.

      +John Edgar
In response to your edit: yes… That statement does claim that profit is more important than life. That’s why I included “regardless of the morality….”

    • Posted by karen salomonsen, at Reply

Thomas Hyle No, Sir the South started the war by the acts of secession and firing the first shots on the United States’ Fort Sumter. It was those actions that caused the North to gather troops and bring unity back to the country. You will not find many historians what will not agree that these are the acts that along with slavery were the causes of the American Civil War.

Traitor by definition, “a person who betrays a friend, country, principle, etc.”  I don’t understand how going to war with your country does not meet the textbook definition of being a traitor.  The confederates betrayed their country.  The confederates killed more Americans than Americans killed in WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Korean War, American Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Iraq/Afghanistan, and Philippine-American War combined!!  Let me guess, Americans should “get over it an accept Donald Trump as president?”  But somehow the confederates who killed Americans should not have just accepted Lincoln as President and his Emancipation Proclamation?

We have COMPLETE DUMBASSES here that STILL believe the Confederacy was a better idea and that the south had the right to leave. I CANNOT WAIT to graduate college and get the hell out of this state! This is coming from someone with a Republican family that I can no longer agree with any more!

PS: since we removed those statues, I say we should erect new statues in their place such as Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, William Sherman, and Joshua Chamberlein.

Mario… it was about a massive labor shortage in the New World, stupid. So massive European nations who could sail assisted in supply labor demands in the west. Europeans, southerners, even northerners in their nations did not look at the kidnapped Africans as human in the sense they were. Same argument for abortion today… it`s OK to kill human life because we define it as not human. Not different. In Vietnam war it was the gooks. Just dehumanize them. Ragheads for Islamics. Don’t pretend things are different really.

Deviant Affinity Two inaccurate statements. look up for closer to historically accurate info about “Columbus”. Washington would have willed his slaves to family and friends had he not been so “British”. AKA, the fundamental belief that slavery is wrong, but was necessary for building the colonies/nation.

    • Posted by Mike Williams, at Reply

+Morality Removing a monument is not an attempt to stop a celebration. It’s history. History should be upheld. Peoples’ ancestors fought in the war and died. Both sides fought for what they felt was right. It’s a thing to remember. Should we remove the Lincoln Memorial since he said that if he could do it, he would like to end that war without freeing a single slave?
