New research from Stanford shows what poor people tend to do when given money. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

"A recently published research paper (paywall) by David Evans of the World Bank and Anna Popova of Stanford University shows that giving money to the poor has a negative effect on the consumption of tobacco and alcohol. Evans and Popova’s research is based on an examination of nineteen studies that assess the impact of cash transfers on expenditures of tobacco and alcohol. Not one of the 19 studies found that cash grants increase tobacco and alcohol consumption and many of them found that it leads to a reduction.

In addition to looking at results from individual studies, the researchers also conducted a meta-analysis—a statistical technique for combining the results from across studies—to find the overall effect on tobacco and alcohol consumption of receiving cash. Their meta-analysis found that the overall effect was slightly negative.

Why on earth would this be? Evans and Popova highlight several possibilities.

One, the cash transfers may change a poor household’s economic calculus. Before receiving the cash, any spending on education or health might have seemed futile, but afterwards, parents might decide that a serious investment in their children’s school was sensible. To make this happen, it might mean cutting back on booze and smoking.”*

For a short while at least, until they use it to help them pay rent or
      something to avoid being. evicted.

I think people drink and smoke less when given money because they drink and
smoke from the stress and to dull reality for a little while. A lot of
people stress drink and smoke during stressful situations. Just my opinion
    though, not actual fact.

stillbreathing37 outside of presidential races, nobody hardly even thinks
about their party affiliation. It’s not something I think about everyday.
Party affiliation has nothing to do with helping the poor. I’m a Republican
and I help the needy. Guess what? I don’t care what they choose to purchase
with my money. I hope they get some beer, a burger, and weed. Right on them!

    • Posted by Ryan Evans, at Reply

      How do you figure that?

    • Posted by MGladwell, at Reply

Ryan Evans he doesn’t figure anything. Liberals always put labels on things
to make themselves feel better. He shouldn’t even be thinking about party
      affiliation…he’s only being divisive.

I’m poor. give me some money and I will buy food, shoes and clothing. I now
have to regularly decide if I want to eat or have decent shoes.

Oh ok so when Liberals and Libertarians be together on friendly terms and
get along you guys delete the thread I see. So are you guys trolling for
hateful comments to use as a defense for some of the idiotic things you
post or what? We were actually sharing information about real life events
dealing with Homelessness and how colleges are screwing the youth straight
out the gate. But I guess that is a problem when the people you’re
demonizing actually get along with your audience.

+Melanoma Trump We started talking about homeless and I shared some history
about living in a car for 6 months. Which lead to other topics and it was a
mutual conversation. Where everyone got along. Then got deleted. (I am
actually mad cause I was talking to someone for one of the Nordic countries
and have been planning on going to Finland. Wanted to learn more. But nope
      gone now.)

    • Posted by Angry Jock, at Reply

I aint broke you bimbo. I am highlighting these fake socialists who are
      rich.

    • Posted by retrospiel, at Reply

Many socialists were born to rich homes. Doesn’t matter, really. It’s what
you use your time and money for that counts.

  12. Posted by philophos, at Reply

Actually, Cenk, you can get a lot of cocaine for $600. I mean, I’m not
    sayin’ anything, but I’m sayin’.

Off-topic, but Ana looked particularly beautiful in this video.

  14. Posted by jdogsful, at Reply

Ive known this was true from my being poor.

  15. Posted by Redwing, at Reply

“The Poor”…why not call them human beings?

  16. Posted by whyamimrpink78, at Reply

This rather vague. You can give money to the poor, but if there is nothing
to spend it on then it does not matter. That is the issue. We can give more
money to the poor, now are they going to spend it opening up a new
    business?

  17. Posted by Sara Danhoff, at Reply

Ana may not know what cocaine costs, but Cenk certainly does, and has a
very loose definition of ‘not a lot’. <.<

  18. Posted by The Grand Poobah, at Reply

So Cenk should give away his money.
