" In 2010, when Arizona passed S.B. 1070– an anti-immigrant costs requiring law enforcement officer to ask that suspected undocumented immigrants supply documents showing their legal standing– the state faced a million-dollar public opinion backlash, as major companies took out of occasions and also conventions in the state. Arizona suffered a deep decrease in GDP, work degrees in the building sector have not totally recouped.

Now, Texas is set to do the same. Are they actually targeting illegals, or just anyone who looks Hispanic?

    • Posted by Short Names, at Reply

DesertEmpire801 It is supposed to target only “suspected” undocumented immigrants but what distinguishes an undocumented immigrant from a US citizen? Especially given a MILLION undocumented immigrants are from Europe.

    • Posted by DesertEmpire801, at Reply

Short Names I just hope this pushes Texas closer to the left, specially if Hispanics start voting in higher numbers.

    • Posted by hudsle, at Reply

To our ” esteemed” legislature (as with then Arizona governor), there is no difference. Bless their hearts

Unfortunately, the only way to actually do this would be to either ask for the papers at each traffic stop, or go full fascist.

I live in Texas and I can promise you literally no one here is worried about immigrants. (Except Trump voters and the Republican politicians of course). Like no one cares at all. It’s an issue that’s really blown out of proportion for no reason

    • Posted by Monkbot10, at Reply

trent ishere a super majority of the Texans I know vote republican, but they vote republican for vague reasons, mostly ‘dead babies’ and ‘big government’. No one under 45 has a problem with immigrants and really only care about the ‘illegal’ ones who commit crimes.

    • Posted by Jim is the man, at Reply

@Flash: That’s true, and encouraging, but it was probably the Trump factor. Run a reasonable Republican Presidential candidate and I bet it swings back to more like 20-25 points.

Tell that to all of the Latin-American (legal immigrants or citizens) who are invariably going to be racially profiled and detained for a ridiculous amount of time because of this bill.

im sure this will be applied to everyone in a fair manner, right? they see a tall blond with blue eyes they officers will ask themselves, she looks like a Swedish model, how did she gen into the country? lets make sure her papers are in order, no right? lets just keep harassing the brown looking people.

    • Posted by Jim is the man, at Reply

@mario: Actually, cops probably will stop the hot Swedish model… same as when they pull over pretty girls. It’s the rest of the white folk who get a pass.

    • Posted by Done Lostme, at Reply

Jim is the man – the number of tickets I have gotten and my insurance rate would beg to differ with you!

    • Posted by Jim is the man, at Reply

@Done Lostme: White folks get a pass on being pulled over or getting a ticket vs a warning in contrast to driving-while-black and maybe now driving-while-brown. But, speed in the white suburbs where there are no minorities to chase, or on the highway where the speed makes cops color blind by physics, and you have an equal shot. Cute girls get pulled over, but most always just get a warning.

Actions are similar to words. If you refuse to give up an identification to show who you are or if you are hear legally that can be grounds for being arrested. Also, that action can be admissible to court to be used against you.

  17. Posted by The Deep North, at Reply

This law reminds me of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s description of the Soviet era persecution of any and all opposition to the new regime by the NKVD. People who failed to rat on “counter-revolutionaries” were themselves arrested and charged with being “collaborators” and “traitors” and sent to the Gulag for 10-20 years. This law is essentially a lighter version of that. It’s a “do our dirty work by ratting on the people we want to persecute or else…” and “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” kind of dynamic. This is really really dangerous stuff and it sets a really bad legal precedent.

One way to fight this type of policy are protests and political speeches that link these types of policies to how Fascists and Communist governments operated in the past.

    • Posted by thelinedrive, at Reply

Wolf WaYa which would e more effective if TYT actually reported on this story when the bill was first purposed in the Texas senate in January so there would be ample pressure on those considering voting for it. Instead the thing is basically on the governors desk at this point with little the public can do at this point.

    • Posted by Wolf WaYa, at Reply

There is simply too much going on for any independent group to follow everything, and i’m sure there’s 10 or more big, sometimes bigger stories for every story that is covered simply because it is all kept as obscure as possible to try not to attract attention to it. I would not be surprised if TYT can only skim (skim not fully read) 10% of the local and state stories because there is probably just so many out there. (also the more popular one becomes the more voices will want to be heard from this type of media channel)

    • Posted by thelinedrive, at Reply

Wolf WaYa except they don’t have to, local groups such as the Texas tribune, Austin American statesman and the dallas morning news have already done their work for them. It’s been four months since the bill was purposed and plenty of time to spare to cover it.
