How can this be fixed? Can a computational or scientific approach be applied to districting?

    • Posted by Jonathan Holmes, at Reply

Yes, actually. There have been several models designed to do this and they all work well. As a software engineer, I can say that there’s plenty of ‘fair’ ways to fix this issue. The problem is that whoever is in power got there because of gerrymandering, so of course they wouldn’t want to fix that problem.

    • Posted by Hanno, at Reply

yes. The technical difficulties for this are pretty minor and people already build algorithms that cant be messed with (like the straight line one, if you want something to google :)). The bigger problem is both democrats and republicans, who already have their seat and are therefore in charge of deciding wether or not to do this, would have to give up a huge chunk of their job security for this to happen. At least until primaries (where packing your district full of your own voters doesnt help you) are starting to be a big enough threat to change their opinion on this.

I live in Tx and there are so many Democrats who don’t vote simply because the rural areas of Texas will turn red giving Texas all 38 EC votes.

FieldHouseFades And it’s the opposite in states like NY many upstate Republicans don’t bother voting due to that Communist cess pool city turning the state blue

Yeah as soon as I saw the title I thought of Austin and said “Texas”. Not happy I was right but we do things big in Texas I guess lol

    Get rid of representatives.

    Invoke direct democracy.

Any time you try to change the corrupt political system using that system, you will lose. You must step outside the system entirely. The answer is not to try to run candidates who will fix the system. You can’t win that way. The answer is to not play in their sandbox. Don’t use their system. Sidestep it.

Use the power the citizenry, of the public. Boycott specific services and consumer goods that affect the corporations who control the congress through lobbying. Get signatures on petitions that scrap the whole system as it exists today. Demand direct democracy. Get 200 million signatures on a petition top scrap the system using representatives and implement a direct democracy. Have MIT computer programmers create programs that draw the districts using algorithms that make sense. Allow 3 months vetting time on any legislation being voted on. Have all legislation be written in a self contained manner – without referring to other legislation, “change the word ‘and’ to the word ‘or’.” The last thing people should do is gather in large groups holding signs to ‘protest’. Organize educational seminars. Show videos that explain all these ideas and more. Educate each other. Use the power of the public. And don’t play their game.

I wrote a Dystopian Novel called “Illegal Residents,” which is available on Amazon that everyone needs to read. Its about officials who took an oath to protect all people, trying to depopulate the country by wiping out all minorities and anyone who isn’t wealthy. The main characters are a group of kids you will adore as they go on a journey to stop the heinous acts being committed. It’s a book everyone should read and I can almost guarantee that you’ll love it. Please show support for a new Author. 🙂

Let’s get this story out and make Trump rant in a tweet about it…
