Gender is not science? You must have also missed that very basic 5th grade biology class teaching us that there are only two genders. There is only male and female. So YOU tell me, do YOU even science? If so what is this mysterious third gender? What is it called? And where does science support this third gender? Show me just one scientific fact to support your delusions.

    • Posted by Hamster Pooh, at Reply

Male and female are sexes. Do you just ignore intersex people? Did you…Oh my, you stopped at fifth grade science, didn’t you? Google intersex. I’m not your science teacher. And I thought that was common knowledge. Intersex people come on a spectrum too.

    • Posted by Nv ZZ, at Reply

Intersex people identify overwhelmingly as one of two genders.

There is no science of multiple genders. Gender occurs overwhelmingly as a bimodal distribution in humans. You can determine a person’s gender in 99.97% of cases through merely looking at the person’s chromosomes. Within the remaining 0.03% of cases the overwhelming majority identify as the gender that is opposite to their sex. Non-conforming individuals thus make up but a fringe minority within just 0.03% of the population. Not only that, the majority of non-conforming individuals eventually conform to one of two genders at some point in their lives. We’re talking about a fringe minority within a fringe minority within 0.03% of the population that permanently identity as gender non-conforming. That hardly constitutes a “science of multiple genders”. This is without mention that gender itself is predicated on a masculine-feminine dichotomy of observed personality traits.

And there is no spectrum. Again, the vast majority of trans people (let alone cis) permanently identify as one gender at some point in their lives. If you want to define gender on a chart, a spectrum is not the right tool. Something like a Venn Diagram would be more accurate.

    • Posted by Hamster Pooh, at Reply

Minorities don’t matter, I suppose, even when there are enough gender identities to fill a–What’s that word again? Ah, spectrum.

Also, if society only acknowledges two labels, you will identify with one of those labels, even if they don’t fit. Are you black or white? You have to pick one. You’ll choose one. But you could be brown. Or olive. Imagine if those labels didn’t exist. Suddenly, you’re left with something that doesn’t quite fit. So it’s just wrong.

adrenacrumb Gender and sex defines two different aspects of the same thing. They are attached, unless you’re a postmodernist (practically anti science) who belives that males and females are born as blank slates and everything about our evolution, hormonal influences, is a social construct. Disclaimer: This is not saying that males and females biologically determined, this is saying it’s a bit of both and neither.

    • Posted by flake452, at Reply

Nope they are not two aspects of the same thing, they are the exact same thing you cannot just redefine words to suit an argument that is Orwellian.

    • Posted by Hammerhook12, at Reply

flake452 I agree with you that they are synonymous. I’m just trying to get through to the people who thinks that gender and sex are 2 completely separated entities. They are not. In particular, not in science.

    • Posted by flake452, at Reply

I see so many people who are not on the far left going along with this Gender and sex are different thing, when we allow them to redefine words it will never stop they are also trying to redefine racism so its impossible to be racist to whites people seem to have a problem with this more personally I hate it all.

In fact, many ppl who hold certain viewpoints do so with little or no facts to begin with. Its not a rational decision but an argument that appeals to their feelings/fears. Im not going to be baited into an argument by a juvenile comment, or waste time making the case against somebody who ultimately wont believe the facts even when confronted with them. 10. Posted by Drake Santiago, at Reply

Bill Nye graduated from Cornell University, one of America’s most prestigious universities, with a degree in mechanical engineering. Anyone who knows anything about college majors will tell you that engineering ranks up there with some of the most challenging college majors. Conversely, Tomi Lahren went to the University of Nevada and graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism – a degree that is known throughout most universities as a “vacant pretty person’s major”. Given the disparity in credentials, as well as Bill Nye’s several decades long career in advocacy of the sciences, and Lahren’s complete lack of experience in this regard, for anyone to take Lahren’s word over Nye’s with regards to climate change, or any other scientific issue, speaks to a deep level of political brainwashing.

    • Posted by Trollop 7, at Reply

You’re merely seeking to discredit her, as she seeks to discredit him.
Nothing you’ve said has anything to do with science.

    • Posted by Drake Santiago, at Reply

I never stated that my statement was a scientific assertion. So you are attacking a straw man. I merely assert that in terms of credibility, Nye has more credibility on these matters than she does. Of course, if Lahren could actually marshal a cogent, and scientifically sound argument – one buttressed by evidence to refute Nye, then I would be open to it. She hasn’t. Nye at least has argued, quite well, on the legitimacy of climate science, and has written and debated the subject, and has referenced findings in the process. So please stop with the false equivalency.

It’s a science show. One side is right. It’s not, say, a political show, or a current events / news show where they at least try to be impartial.
Similarly, you don’t see Muslim clerics on Christian TV shows giving their side of the story.
Why should climate deniers and anti-vaxx nuts get air time and credence when what they’re pushing is very dangerous ideas. It’s one thing to deny evolution or the spherical shape of the Earth, but to deny climate change and/or vaccine efficiency is incredibly dangerous.

    • Posted by Simon Winn, at Reply

+Secular Guy really one side is right. Take the episode on gender, where were the scientists that are researching that certain traits and behaviour can be hardwired into our genetics.

We have been having a debate on what is nature vs what is nurture for along time, the show only took the nurture argument.

    • Posted by ximplex1, at Reply

+Secular Guy Most people don’t deny that climate change exists… We just don’t attribute it to being man-made.

  12. Posted by MrCatfishjr, at Reply

Global warming refers only to the Earth’s rising surface temperature, while climate change includes warming and the “side effects” of warming—like melting glaciers, heavier rainstorms, or more frequent drought. Said another way, global warming is one symptom of the much larger problem of human-caused climate change.

    • Posted by Eironeia JSPS, at Reply

+Wendy Scott To be fair, “climate change” *is* normal and cyclical. The real problem is the extremely fast rate at which it’s currently occurring, which is implied by the affix of “human caused”. I think the problem with the term global warming is that some parts of the world will likely get colder/wetter/windier rather than warmer as the name would indicate… it’s a little less accurate, and I think it makes it easier for the deniers to deny. How would you feel about “rapid climate change” as a phrase?

    • Posted by Wendy Scott, at Reply

Well, Eironeia, I’m pretty sure “climate change” was one of those right-wing constructs meant to make people more comfortable about the whole thing so they’d stop demanding the government do something about it. But world average temperatures are what are going up, fast, so to me “global warming” makes sense, plus it reminds us that this is just *one planet*, we all live on it, we share in its resources, and we had _better damn well take care of it_. It’s all we’ve got.

One does not need to be a climate scientist to use their platform and speak about important issues. Nye repeats the opinion of most scientists and keeps up to date with the data. Just because I have a doctorate in something doesn’t mean that I’m unable to grasp the concepts of another science more than most people. Knowledge doesn’t require a degree.

    • Posted by Vanna Song, at Reply

Louis Lalande: He never claimed to be a climate scientist. Just like I never claimed to be an evolutionary biologist. It’s our knowledge of topics that count. We leave the advanced stuff to the experts in the field. That’s a lot better than, say, ignorant creationists spouting nonsense about topics they obviously have no knowledge of.

Bill Nye has his formal degree in engineering, but he’s been a professional “science explainer” for years. He has written books on Science and had created some of the largest groups that are dedicated to science. You don’t have to have a degree specifically for climate science to understand weather and climate. I hardly think you could create compressors for jets without understanding science thoroughly.

“Nye began his career as a mechanical engineer for Boeing Corporation in Seattle, where he invented a hydraulic resonance suppressor tube used on 747 airplanes.[3]…

Following the success of his show, Nye continued to advocate for science, becoming the CEO of The Planetary Society and helping develop sundials for the Mars Exploration Rover missions.[6] Nye has written multiple best-selling books on science, including Undeniable: Evolution and the Science of Creation in 2014 and Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World in 2015. “
