Violence Mars May Day Protests

Previously relaxed objections burst out in violence on May Day. Brett Erlich, Hannah Cranston, and Kim Horcher, the hosts of The Young Turks, show you exactly what happened. Tell us what you believe in the remark section below.

" A minimum of 25 individuals were detained Monday when a May Day rally in Portland, Oregon, transformed violent. The event, initially a march for labor legal rights, expanded chaotic after authorities as well as self-proclaimed anarchists entered into conflict, with the anarchists tossing smoke bombs, Pepsi cans, and various other objects at police, and also officers shooting non-lethal projectiles in return. The face-off escalated with companies' home windows smashed, bonfires set in the streets, and also at the very least one police car assaulted. Cops ultimately stated the march a riot as well as terminated its permit at 4:30 p.m., buying guests to distribute. Authorities intimidated to apprehend any individual in the roads after the permit was terminated early in the evening."

+04mzwach be sarcastic all you want my point is that they did not go there to start violence otherwise it would have been like that out of the gate. Other groups came in inserted themselves into the protest wanting it to cause violence and property damage.

    • Posted by lopezb, at Reply

Rachael, that is exactly the aim of these jerks. They are miniscule groups who try to hijack the peaceful protests by their selfish violence because they can’t get attention any other way. . These are just selfish piglets and authoritarian anarchists (yes, that’s an oxymoron) who have to be called out. It is so frustrating, and why peaceful protest is the only way to go. The situation we are in thanks to Trump and his billionaire friends on the one hand and the Hillerian Dem party elite on the other is so serious that we do not have time and space for these self- indulgent, immature, self-absorbed, egotistical, self-styled anarchists who are playing right into Trump’s, Pence’s, Hannity’s, and Bannon’s hands and trying to drag us all into their own personal hell. Here is some constructive advice to them. Grow up and gain some wisdom. Go live with the Indians at one of the Water Protector camps for a few months and open up your heart and mind to learn from them that what wins over the hatred and power of the state oppressors is not the violence that their police machine feeds on, but the opposite: prayer and love and caring, for the planet, the children, and the future.

Liberals are a danger to society

    • Posted by Ander Drake, at Reply

Liberals don’t want seven different wars in the middle east and in pressuring North Korea which could start a nuclear war. The republicans have been suppressing people’s freedoms and cheating in the election to suppress the vote of the people. We don’t want the world to end in order to prove rambo Jesus is real. Alex Jones admitted to being a fraud on his own show and if he’s a fraud then so are all those other right wing talk show hosts.

    • Posted by Listenbuddy1, at Reply

+Ander Drake So being weak with N Korea while they become more strong is the answer? hardly

    • Posted by Jim is the man, at Reply

@@@@Listenbuddy1: First, we have inspectors in NK’s reactors and they couldn’t build nukes when Clinton was in office. Then GWB made his Axis of Evil speech, frightened NK, and got the inspectors kicked out.

Second, Kim Jong is an attention seeking narcissist (sound familiar?) Poke him and he responds. Like a troll, it’s best to ignore him. It’s not going to _limit_ his rate of weapons progress if we do but it might slow it.

He knows where we stand, we know where he stands. When he does something serious worth responding to, respond. Rattling spears just aggravates and accelerates the situation.

I actually agree with OP, all I see is a manufactured fire and heavily militarized police making peaceful protesters run for their lives while shooting tear gas at them. and then allegations of the damage caused but no video to verify, and allegations of violence but the video only shows the police being violent. It really does look like a BLM protest.

    • Posted by Lemmiwinks, at Reply

Anarchisml, as a political philosophy, does not “reject hierarchy”. They reject any authority that cannot “legitimize itself”. It is not defined as “people who want anarchy”. I imagine political anarchists (such as Chomsky?) have different views from people like Antifa.

    • Posted by Edward Bernayse666, at Reply

@adam smith they specifically mentioned antifa on this video. there was some “uuuumm uhhhhhh” trying to cover this one but they covered it. really as progressives, it would be important to directly go after antifa and anyone who supports them. they are the biggest threat to the progressive movement and so they need to drop that unity crap and completely go after them instead of a half assed style where they act like they aren’t sure if they should say anything negative about them or not.

    • Posted by Edward Bernayse666, at Reply

@aslan kedira diego except that they did in fact mention antifa in the video. as a matter of fact cenk and ana have denounced them on several other past videos on antifa. he didn’t nail anything. he swung and missed on that one badly.

    • Posted by playgrrrr, at Reply

+cry w You’re halfway there, my friend. Of course his _anger_ can be justified. No one is claiming otherwise. The same can be said about”Antifa”‘. That’s besides the point. What can’t be justified is the actions they take to channel it. Both are not equivalent, but neither are productive. Yes TYT should be more vocal about calling out violence. But you can’t come here to criticize TYT for dishonesty by deliberately perpetrating dishonesty and deception yourself.
There’s a difference between not calling something out and defending it. There’s a difference between “Antifa” doing vandalism and the entire protest being a riot. There’s a difference between “Antifa” doing vandalism and “liberals” as a group being violent. Call TYT out on their lack of condemnation of those people, but don’t go in the same breath mixing up all of the above. Anger is fine. Criticizing others for lack of integrity while you have none is not.

2:30 well maybe these anarchists (and antifa) are also for workers rights, and maybe, just maybe, they have the right idea and you don’t. Workers have and will forever be fucked by capitalism, so maybe, just maybe, a revolution against capitalism into a more communal, collectivist world, with much smaller municipalities to distribute things like water and electricity, maybe a court system, and small collectives, maybe the size of neighborhoods, would distribute things like property. Maybe, just maybe, they would do this in a way so that the people of a neighborhood would own all the property in that neighborhood, and thus communities themselves would distribute resources amongst themselves. Maybe the factories plants etc. would be owned by workers themselves to eliminate any forms of exploitation. Maybe, just maybe, if done on a large enough scale (globally) people would be able to distribute all the wealth, property and every day items equally across the world, eliminating things like hunger, poverty, war, and most types of crime. Maybe, just maybe, with small state like governments (US version of state, i.e Vermont) with a court system and maybe some sort of officials, elected through direct democracy, would uphold things like constitutional rights. Maybe just maybe, a more-or-less stateless, classless, hierarchyless, moneyless, oppressionless society IS possible (what I’m saying is something sort of like Rojava right now, but on a global scale). Maybe, just maybe, (talking to Cenk here) actually find out what anarchism, socialism, and communism are before opening your big fat mouth. What I’m saying is that maybe people actually have a reason to riot, and they aren’t just anxty teens looking for trouble and breaking stuff.

    • Posted by Ketil Flatnose, at Reply

Yes, i do what open borders, more specifically, no borders. Only if you left capitalism and the state would this be in anyway a problem.

    • Posted by Ketil Flatnose, at Reply

Anarchism has never been implemented on a large scale (which is a legitimate criticism of it, as we don’t really what global, or even large scale anarchy would look like), and yes, when communism and socialism have been implemented, they’ve been implemented through the use of a state, which obviously is the wrong way to do it.

    • Posted by Ketil Flatnose, at Reply

      Dave Z i’m CLEARLY not a statist.

    • Posted by Ketil Flatnose, at Reply

These things have only truly been implemented on Republican Catalonia, and a few other places. Obviously these areas where ridden of anarchism very quickly, of no fault of their own, states around them came down on them very swiftly and quickly, not giving them any time to develop.

    • Posted by Fawkzzz, at Reply

+Gustav The Mad Funny how you disingenuous right wingers never mention the fact that the two political parties switched in the 60s, so the racist democrats in the south became republicans. The KKK was created way before that. Also, stop equating BLM to the KKK. Last I checked, BLM protestors weren’t lynching and torturing white people based on the color of their skin, and bringing their entire families to watch the show.

The fact that you put the KKK in a negative category implies that you don’t agree with them. We all know right wingers sympathize with the KKK.

    • Posted by dancinkindofguy, at Reply

Fawkzzz – they’re just shooting white cops like in New York, Dallas and Baton Rouge. So, no, BLM and KKK shouldn’t be equated, at least in the present day. KKK hasn’t done much of anything in 40 years. BLM on the other hand, has quite a number in the last 2.
