    FYI, I was an overnight worker for Wal-Mart. In the last two years they have started doing away the overnight position. They took the $1 pay increase away from us when they moved us to days. That’s on top of them removing a Sunday premium, where if you worked Sunday you got an extra dollar per hour. When adjusted for inflation, I am making less for Walmart than I was at the beginning of 2016. They also laid off a massive amount of managerial jobs/positions across the company. All they are doing is moving around the numbers, and saying it is because of the tax bill.

      dan thrash it’s unfortunately not that simple depending on where you live. If you live in a town in ruel statehood, find a job that pays 16 an hour is not always guaranteed. The job market is just not as simple as you put it. I live in a city and a lot of minimum wage jobs here pay less than 10 an hour, even if workers werer to go to a major employer like Nationwide Insurance or Chase Bank, their wages are at 14 an hour or less from what I’ve heard from people I know that work at both companies. I wish what you were saying was true but unfortunately it’s not and the fault for not attracting new employers with a decent wage is not the employee applicants in any way.

      dan thrash Yes you’re right millions and millions of minimum wage workers shoud just open a business, and they’re become instant wealthy. They sure will compete aganist the elite corporations like Amazon, Walmart, McDonald’s etc /s. So what is it, you complain when people complain about their wages and when corporations import illegals and pay them less than minimum wage, you complain about the illegals. Yes people had businesses untill Walmart ran them out of town with their cheap made crap from china.     Every person reporting on companies that are increasing minimum wages and offering better benefits have failed to notice that this is for Full-time employees. They don’t hire full-time. They keep a person’s hours just below full-time status so they don’t have to give you benefits. Now, even though they are going to pay higher wages, they’re just going to cut hours. You’ll see.

    $10-$11 an hour is roughly the minimum wage in the UK but you rarely see it being brought up as an issue over here. Maybe it’s because we have more in the way of safety nets to help those on low income and because people don’t need to find hundreds of pounds each month for health insurance.

    It all adds up:

    – Sam’s Club laid off approx 11,025 employees today. If they are full-time employees making $11/ hour this = $252m

    – Walmart to give an average bonus of a $190 to each of their 1.4m US employees. This equates to $266m

    Basically the layoffs pay for the Bonuses

      Meh, that actually makes sense. If a company can stay as profitable with fewer people – whats the problem there?

      I think the larger problem is that the tax code and various fees will make it that walmart saves 2, you pay 2 more, and you get one in the form of a raise.

    Key word is, “full time employee” most walmart employees at the stores are hired at part time and worked to the limit of being part time so that they won’t have to pay full time benefits. If you are part time your benefits are non-existent.

      I think it would be a fun if we made a law that said any store that takes food stamps or welfare benefit cards have to have at least 51% full time employees. Not only are the jobs not full time, but the hours float so they can’t get another job to supplement their income.
