She’s a very smart woman, clearly. She lived in an awful country full of propaganda, but she had the strength to reject the comfortable lies and leave everything behind. She has great English pronunciation, especially for someone who couldn’t have even learned until adulthood. She probably speaks Chinese too.

    • Posted by bill spiva, at Reply

Bullshit.  She is the propaganda, just like the Kuwaiti woman who lied to congress and said she saw Iraqi soldiers taking babies out of incubators back in the 90s.

    • Posted by Antonio J. Cabrera, at Reply

      I find it suspicious, even.

    • Posted by 板垣退助, at Reply

+bill spiva There needs not be any propaganda towards north korea. The place speaks for itself. From it shooting missles at japan , to abducting japanese and south korean citizens , to the korean air bombing , the blatant violation of nation’s sovereignty with their assassinations , constant threats of complete destruction to others….Propaganda is not necessary.

the chinese know that if north korea collapses, they (and south korea, japan and Russia) will suddenly have millions of starving north Koreans on their borders, nothing keeping them in.

    • Posted by Harry Bawls, at Reply

In World War III I’ll stand with NATO against Russia.

    • Posted by 板垣退助, at Reply

Japan is an island. Unless these refugees decide to set sail they won’t be at our borders. The most likely scenario is that most of them would flood into china. I doubt that north korea would completely collapse , there are a few people on the cards to take the lead , kim jong nam was one of them…..but unfortunately he met his demise in an airport. Plus , i doubt the flow of information is that great within north korea. I know that only recently mobile phones have become somewhat common place among the more affluent. Therefore a mass exodus of people may not be as likely as we think.

    • Posted by dangerouslytalented, at Reply

Every single person with access to a watercraft will try crossing by sea. Because all the roads north and south will be jammed. If North Korea collapses and food can’t get in or around, then they will flee in whatever way possible.

    • Posted by Jeroen Bollen, at Reply

+板垣退助 If refugees wouldn’t take boats, then there wouldn’t be a refugee crisis in Europe.

While the main problem of the people is starving, the moron in chief being FAT alone is offensive. Is this coincidence, is he a sadist or does he wants to say the world: look at me, we have enough food?

    • Posted by Diana Endo, at Reply

He is emulating his grandfather in every way. His weight, clothes, posture, haircut. It’s all very calculated. There are roughly 50K NK refugees in SK. They were so brainwashed they thought the Beloved Leader can read their minds. Mom’s tell kids the birds and flowers can listen and tell their secrets as a way of teaching kids to say nothing negative.

if China opens its borders to N Korea’s they will literally flood northern China (understandably so) just think about it about 10-15 million N Koreans swarm the border into China as refugees

    • Posted by Skyline711, at Reply

David Harrison and what guarantees do they offer? Japan and South Korea in particular area already packed to the max they got barely any living space for the current population. Let alone taking millions of N Koreans that are living in a time capsule. It’s like taking a person frm the 60s and bringing them up to speed with modern day.. it’ll be a daunting task to say the least they may take up to a million each if they’re generous but no more.. only China can realistically bare the brunt of millions of NK refugees take em and put them in its ghost towns

    • Posted by David Harrison, at Reply

Skyline711 A farmer in North Korea can become a farmer in Siberia, and with modern farming equipment (even if it’s not modern by our standards) they will thrive. Businesses in declining towns will open up again when there are enough people living there to support them.

    • Posted by Sam Henri, at Reply

Given how large China is, I think they have the space to accommodate them. I’m pretty sure the international community would be willing to put up cash to help with the situation. More likely, China doesn’t want to lose a geo-political ally like North Korea and the geographical buffer it provides from US backed South Korea.

    • Posted by Skyline711, at Reply

Sam Henri lol yeh most likely possibility.. and even if there was a unified Korea plus US plus Japanese forces they would collectively dare not take on China cuz China isn’t the China of 1950s and even then it defeated the US and its allies.. thts y North Korea exists today.. there’s no significant geo political interest in NK anymore honestly I get it when Mao was in power but he’s long gone (thankfully) and modern day China is nothing but capitalist mindside under a communist flag

    • Posted by KETimiko, at Reply

I highly doubt more than half the population of the country would defect if China stopped sending defectors back to be murdered and tortured; which I think we can both agree is the morally correct thing to do regardless of the economic burden or the geo-political consequences. Plus, South Korea already has integration programs for North Korean refugees. Simply letting them have an embassy in China would spread some of the burden. As for Japan, not that those xenophobes would do it, but they could actually benefit from an influx of young people into their country. It would require a heavy initial investment but they have a serious aging population problem, which they really like to pretend doesn’t exist.

Either way, not that this will happen any time soon. N. Korea is a buffer zone between China and S. Korea, so by default the US, so China will keep on playing nice with the Kim dynasty.

    • Posted by shizkiz1, at Reply

+Real News The definition of a ‘republic’ regards a power that is elected by the people and their representatives. The existence of the electoral college system would be a complete obstruction to such a definition. Additionally, you just stated the advantages. But you didn’t deny the disadvantages I mentioned previously. You stated America has the best opportunity to succeed, yet you didn’t deny that America does not have one of the best education system in the west. This only proves my point that America is not the ideal country for the best quality of life unless you are already born in at least a middle class family. What you are saying, is not what you believe, but it is what you *want* to believe.

+Real News Actually we have fewer doctors per person than France does. They not only have more doctors but they do in fact have the best. Their healthcare system is much quicker and significantly less expensive. Services that could cost thousands of dollars here in the US will cost $75 for a US citizen in France. Only French citizens qualify for single payer after all.
